After moving from Singapore to New Zealand, Alex Hammond (St. Peter’s 2015–2017) found a new approach to learning. Struggling to connect with traditional classroom environments, she discovered hands-on subjects like Agricultural Studies, Food Technology and Outdoor Education, an experience that helped shape the direction of her future.
After completing Year 12, Alex based herself in Australia on and off over a three-year period, working on a farm in Queensland gaining valuable industry experience and life skills. Upon returning to New Zealand, she began working at Cambridge Grains, a role that became one of the most important steps in her journey. Working closely with Chanel Beatson (director of Cambridge Grains) played a significant part in shaping Alex’s work ethic, confidence and professional direction, ultimately helping pave the path for her to go out on her own and start her business.
Through Cavaletti Group, Alex now works with agri and equine businesses on marketing, growth strategy and consultancy across New Zealand and internationally. Sharing her journey recently with St. Peter’s students, the message was clear: success doesn’t always require a traditional path, and stepping outside your comfort zone is often where the most meaningful growth happens. Alex also credits her parents, Fiona Hammond, who currently works at St. Peter’s, and Peter Hammond, former Director of Equestrian, for supporting the different paths and opportunities she chose to pursue along the way.
