Southern Rangitikei Veterinary Services Ltd Locally owned mixed practice with clinics in Bulls & Marton, SRVS offers a wide range of services

Southern Rangitikei Veterinary Services (SRVS Ltd) is a contract Veterinary practice, established in 1980 to serve the greater Rangitikei region. Our Veterinary staff have the experience and skill to provide medical care for a wide range of animal species including:
• Production & Lifestyle Animals: beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, deer
• Other Livestock
• Equine Animals
• Pets & Companion Animals: dogs, cats, pocket pets, birds and other pets

With clinics in both Bulls and Marton, we can undertake a number of in-practice services, allowing for faster, more accurate care. We have surgical facilities for treatment of large and small animals, a pet hospital ward for overnight care of small animals, x-ray, endoscopy and ultrasound equipment, plus a state-of-the-art equine treatment & surgical facility. Our Veterinarians are also available for on-farm or residential visits.

Before Christmas gets crazy, check in on their health. 🌲

October is the perfect time to give your pet a health check before the busy Christmas season arrives.

For October only, book your dog or cat in for a consult and add blood testing for an additional $68.

🐶 For dogs, the blood test checks important markers including:
• Liver function
• Kidney function
• Protein levels

🐱 For cats, we’ll check all of the above PLUS thyroid levels (while stocks last) - particularly useful as thyroid changes can become more common as cats get older.

Blood tests can give us valuable information about what’s happening inside your pet, even when everything seems perfectly normal on the outside.

Could your pet's food help support their emotional wellbeing?

It's Anxiety Month at SRVS, and we're talking about something you might not have considered when it comes to managing stress in your pets... their diet!

Just like us, dogs and cats can experience stress and anxiety. Whether it's fireworks, thunderstorms, moving house, changes in routine or even a new family member, these situations can leave our pets feeling overwhelmed.

And sometimes, the signs aren't as obvious as you might think!

You might notice:
Panting, trembling or shaking
Excessive licking or salivating
Changes in appetite
Vomiting or diarrhoea
Hiding or changes in behaviour

So, where does Royal Canin Calm come in?

Royal Canin Calm is a specially formulated veterinary diet available for both dogs and cats, designed to help support emotional balance during stressful situations.

What's inside?

The formula contains a hydrolysed milk protein and an adapted level of L-tryptophan, which help support emotional balance in stressful environments and social situations.

But that's not all!

Stress doesn't just affect behaviour. It can also impact digestion, skin health and urinary health. Royal Canin Calm has been formulated to provide nutritional support in these areas too.

How long does it take to work?
Royal Canin Calm isn't an instant fix! It's recommended to start feeding it 10 days to 4 weeks before an anticipated stressful event, allowing time for its nutritional support to take effect. The time needed and the response can vary between pets.

It’s Vet Nurse Appreciation Week - and BOY do we appreciate them.

And while the official week might say “Vet Nurse”, we’re absolutely including our incredible large animal techs in the celebrations too!

Our nurses and techs are some pretty incredible humans.

They bring compassion, empathy, patience, skill and a whole lot of heart to work every single day. Whether they’re caring for pets in the clinic, supporting our vets, helping clients, working out on farm, handling stock, or doing one of the million things that happen behind the scenes - they’re a huge part of what makes SRVS, SRVS.

But beyond being brilliant at what they do, they’re also some of the most fun people we know.

They’re the people you want beside you on the hard days, the ridiculously busy days and the days where absolutely nothing goes to plan.

They make us laugh, they support each other, and they’re genuinely just a bloody great group of people to be around.

We think our nurses and large animal techs are pretty special - but we might be slightly biased.

⚠️ BLOAT WARNING!!⚠️

Conditions have been perfect for frothy bloat recently, and unfortunately, we have already seen deaths on more than one farm.

Mild, dry conditions meant the normal die-back of clover and legume species over winter wasn’t as significant this year. As a result, many farms have gone into spring with higher-than-average legume-dominant pastures.

These pastures pose the biggest risk for frothy bloat due to their high levels of easily digestible proteins and carbohydrates, alongside low levels of fibre.

So, what can you do?

Most of our farmers will have received a detailed email from us this week covering identification, treatment and prevention. If you haven’t received it and would like a copy, please get in touch.

There is no single prevention method that works perfectly on its own, so a multi-pronged approach is important.

But one of the most important things you can do is:

MONITOR YOUR STOCK.
This is not the time for a “she’ll be right” approach.
Hungry cattle moving onto high-risk feed can begin showing signs of bloat within just 15 minutes to 2 hours after moving onto a new break.

Get out there, check your cattle regularly, and act quickly if something doesn’t look right.
