August is pet dental awareness month and to celebrate we have 20% off routine dental cleanings and routine dental x-rays during the months of August and September as long as they are booked in August 🦷

Dental disease is one of the most common health issues we see in veterinary medicine, with 70% of cats and 80% of dogs being affected by periodontal disease by the time they are 2 years old. Brushing your pets’ teeth daily with pet-safe toothpaste is one of the best ways to help prevent periodontal disease from developing - just like how we brush our own teeth every day! We stock a range of dental products including toothpaste/brushes, dental food, water additives and dental chews to help aid your pet’s dental hygiene.

Pets don't often display obvious symptoms of dental pain but some signs to look for that indicate your pet may already be suffering from periodontal disease include bad breath, red/inflamed gums that bleed easily, plaque and calculus build up on the teeth, and wobbly or missing teeth. Left untreated, periodontal disease can cause significant pain and lead to other health complications (such as kidney disease) affecting their quality of life.

Treatment of dental disease includes a teeth cleaning (scale and polish) under anaesthetic by our veterinarian to remove plaque and calculus off the teeth to prevent harmful bacteria from being trapped under the gums. Our veterinarian may also recommend dental x-rays to see if any teeth need extracting.

PICTURE FOR ATTENTION – This Saturday the 25th of July we are open but there will be NO VETERINARIAN ONSITE. This means we will be able to sell over the counter products (such as food, flea treatment etc) but there will be no capacity for vet consultations. Nurse consults may be booked at the discretion of the staff members that are working.

If you have any urgent problems that require veterinary care while we are open our staff will be able to offer advise on where you can go to be seen if required.

We have some equally wonderful and sad news to share with our clients. The good news is our lovely vet Dr Margaret is pregnant with her second child, and we are super excited for her! The sad news is this means she is headed off on maternity leave, with her last day being this Friday the 24th of July.

We will miss Dr Maggie (as she is affectionately known) and the expertise she brings to our Veterinary team while she is away, but we are so excited for this journey Maggie and her little family are about to embark on 💙

Mānawatia a Matariki! ✨

Our clinic will be CLOSED from the 10th to the 12th of July for the Matariki public holiday, as our team takes some well-deserved time off to rest, reflect, and spend time with their whānau and mōkai.
Matariki is a special time to remember those who have passed, celebrate the present, and look forward to the year ahead with hope and gratitude.

We will reopen on the 13th of July resuming our normal hours (8am-6pm) and look forward to caring for your beloved pets then.

Let’s talk about blood pressure in our pets! In this video we see Dr Christie’s gorgeous cat Quin having his blood pressure taken. Monitoring blood pressure is an important part of your pet's healthcare. High or low blood pressure can affect the heart, kidneys, eyes, and other organs, so checking it helps us identify and manage health problems early.

In this video we are using a Doppler on Quin – a Doppler blood pressure monitor is a safe, non-invasive device that allows us to measure your pet's blood pressure by detecting blood flow through an artery.

To take your pets blood pressure, we ensure to keep them as calm, comfortable and happy as possible – like Quin here happily chowing down a Churu pop! A carefully measured cuff is placed around their leg, and a small amount of fur is clipped where we place the probe. The Doppler probe is placed over an artery which allows us to hear your pets blood flow and then the cuff is inflated until the blood flow is briefly stopped. The cuff is then slowly deflated and as blood flows back through the artery the Doppler will pick up on the sound – this is the point we use to measure your pets systolic blood pressure.

The process is not painful, but some pets might find the feeling of the cuff inflating a bit unusual. Pets can become nervous in a veterinary clinic, which may temporarily increase their blood pressure. For this reason, we allow time for your pet to relax before taking measurements – sometimes this may mean leaving your pet with us for the day so we can take multiple readings to ensure an accurate blood pressure measurement. In other cases, we may discuss the option of coming to your home to take your pets blood pressure there instead, if they are really nervous about being in clinic.
