🔬 A Closer Look at What Our Birds Leave Behind! 💩

Our new microscope has been getting a workout!

As part of setting up our new hospital, we’ve been doing some self-learning and getting familiar with looking at bird droppings under the microscope. We’ve been working through some books and resources to learn what we’re looking at and why it can be useful when monitoring the health of birds in our care.

There is a LOT to learn, and we’re certainly not experts yet! But we’re enjoying getting to know another important part of bird rehabilitation.

I’ll also be spending some time with a vet soon to get further insight and learn more about what we’re seeing under the microscope.

For now, here’s a little look at some of the things we’ve been discovering!

🕊️ Another Kererū Released 💚

Today we were able to release the third of our four kererū who came into our care following window strikes.

After spending time recovering with us, it was wonderful to see this bird ready to return to the wild. 🥹💚

Sadly, the fourth kererū wasn’t recovering as we had hoped. It had a very badly fractured shoulder, and after assessing its condition, the vets made the difficult decision to have it euthanised.

While it’s always hard to lose a bird in our care, sometimes the kindest thing we can do is prevent further suffering.

We’re grateful we were able to give both birds the care they needed and, for this one, a second chance back in the wild.

🔬 Another Piece of Equipment for Our New Hospital 💚

We’ve recently added a microscope to our new bird hospital and while it might not be the most exciting-looking piece of equipment, it will be a really useful tool in our day-to-day care!

One of the things we’ll be using it for is analysing bird droppings (poo!). 💩🔬

A bird’s droppings can tell us a surprising amount about what’s happening inside the bird. Looking at samples under a microscope can help us identify things such as parasites and other abnormalities, giving us valuable information when assessing a bird’s health and recovery.

It’s just another part of putting together a hospital that allows us to better monitor and care for the native birds that come through our doors.

There are a lot of little pieces that go into running a bird hospital, even the poo gets examined!

⚖️ An Important Piece of Equipment in Our Hospital 🐦💚

Something as simple as a set of scales is actually incredibly important when caring for native birds.

We regularly weigh birds throughout their rehabilitation to monitor their condition, track weight gain or loss, help assess their recovery, and make sure treatments and medication are appropriate for their size. For some birds, their weight can tell us a lot about how they’re progressing.

We had a set of Wedderburn scales that were given to us several years ago, and before putting them to work in our new hospital, we wanted to make sure they were in perfect working order.

We contacted Wedderburn New Zealand in Auckland, and they very generously provided us with a new power cord, serviced the scales completely free of charge, and checked their accuracy to make sure the weights were spot on.

And they didn’t stop there! They also donated a second set of scales, which will be incredibly useful as we continue setting up our new hospital. 🥹💚

A massive thank you to the team at Wedderburn New Zealand for going above and beyond to support Native Nest. Equipment like this might seem simple, but it plays an important role in providing the best possible care for the birds that come through our doors.

🕊️ A Very Special Kererū Release 💚

We’ve had another kererū release, and while every release is special, this one was particularly meaningful.

We believe this kererū was still quite young, possibly around a year old. When we returned it to the area where it came from, something really special happened.

Within about a minute, a large female kererū arrived, its mum. Shortly afterwards, its dad returned too. 🥹🕊️

Kererū are very family-oriented birds, so seeing this young kererū reunited with its family was incredibly special. Moments like this are exactly why we do what we do.

🕊️ Kererū Release Update 💚

Some good news from the hospital, the first of our four kererū has now been released!

This bird was one of the original two patients staying in our new hospital and has made a great recovery following a window strike. After spending time in our care and building up its strength, it was ready to head back where it belongs.

That leaves three kererū still in our care, all at different stages of their recovery. We’re hopeful we’ll have more good news to share soon.

Every release is special, but it’s particularly exciting to see one of the first birds admitted to the new hospital successfully return to the wild. 💚🐦

🏥 Kererū Update 💚

We currently have four kererū in our care.

Our first two kererū patients in the new hospital have now graduated from the ICU room and moved into a larger aviary as they continue their recovery.

Both birds are making good progress, and we’re hopeful they’ll be ready for release later this week.

Meanwhile, the ICU room hasn’t stayed empty for long. We now have two new kererū patients settling in. One was admitted following a window strike, while the other was unfortunately hit by a car.

One of our new arrivals is currently being force-fed while it recovers and regains its strength. This is often necessary after a bird has suffered trauma and isn’t yet eating enough on its own.

Thankfully, none of these birds have needed intensive care. They’re currently making use of the ICU room while we wait for the doors to be fitted to our rehabilitation cages.

It’s exciting to see the hospital already helping native birds on their journey to recovery, even as we continue putting the finishing touches on it 💚

💚 Moments Like This Make It All Worthwhile 💚

One of the most rewarding parts of wildlife rehabilitation is getting to see birds thriving after they’ve been released.

These two kererū have both spent time in our care before, and now we regularly see them out and about, living life exactly as they should be.

Not every bird’s journey is easy, but seeing healthy birds back in the wild makes all the hard work worthwhile

Sometimes, the best reward is simply spotting a familiar face 💚🐦
