🏥 The Wall-Mounted Cages Are Complete! 🐦💚

One more exciting step for our new bird hospital, the plaques are now on our wall-mounted rehabilitation cages!

These cages have been a huge project, and we’re incredibly grateful to all the families, businesses and organisations who have supported us by sponsoring a cage.

Each plaque represents someone who has chosen to support the care and rehabilitation of New Zealand’s native birds, and we’re so proud to have their names as part of our new hospital.

🕊️ Throwback Thursday 💚

Taking a little trip down memory lane with this beautiful kererū we rescued.

Kererū hold a special place at Native Nest, and we’ve had the privilege of caring for quite a few of these beautiful birds over the years.

Looking back at some of our past rescues is a lovely reminder of why we do what we do, helping injured native birds recover and return to where they belong.

🌳 A Huge Thank You to Takana Native Tree Nursery 💚

We’d like to say a very big thank you to Takana Native Tree Nursery for their incredibly generous donation of a whole lot of large native trees and for delivering them to us!

These trees are going to make a huge difference around Native Nest. 🌿

Once planted, they’ll provide food, shelter and habitat for native birds, while also helping provide shade and shelter around some of our rehabilitation cages.

It’s another important part of creating an environment that feels as natural as possible for the birds in our care, while also supporting the native wildlife that visits our property.

We’re so grateful to Takana Native Tree Nursery for helping us bring more native planting into Native Nest. We can’t wait to get them all in the ground and watch them grow! 🌳🐦💚

🦉 Feeding Time at Native Nest 💚

A little behind-the-scenes look at our ruru with the injured eye.

This one has needed some extra help with feeding while it recovers, so we’ve been hand-feeding it small pieces of meat with tweezers.

It’s pretty amazing to watch how quickly it recognises the food and uses its beak to grab and swallow each piece. 🥹🦉

Ruru are nocturnal hunters, naturally catching and eating things like mice and other small prey. For birds in care, sometimes we need to give them a helping hand while they’re recovering.

We’ll keep monitoring this little one closely and hopefully continue to see good progress. 💚

🦉 A New Ruru in Our Care 💚

This beautiful ruru came into our care after being hit by a car and unfortunately has some damage to its eye.

It was seen by a vet and, after assessment, we’ve started supporting its recovery here at Native Nest.

This one has needed some force feeding while it gets back on its feet, but it’s now also getting plenty of what ruru love, fresh mice! 🐭🦉

We’ll be keeping a close eye on its eye injury and overall condition as it continues its rehabilitation with us.

Hopefully, with some time, care and a good supply of mice, we’ll see this little one make a strong recovery. 💚

We’ll keep you updated on its progress.

🕊️ Another Kererū in Our Care 💚

This beautiful kererū came into our care after a window strike and was in a very poor condition when it arrived.

It was extremely skinny and needed some extra support to get it back on track. We began careful force feeding to help build its strength while we monitored its recovery.

It was also taken to our friends at Warkworth Vets, where it was X-rayed to check for any injuries that may not have been obvious.

For now, we’re taking things one day at a time and giving this kererū the care and time it needs.

We’ll keep you updated on its progress.

Native Nest is a native bird rehabilitation centre based in Omaha, dedicated to caring for injured, sick and orphaned native birds and giving them the best chance of returning to the wild.

🐦 What we do
We are DOC approved and accept any New Zealand native bird that needs help, including tūī, kererū, ruru, kōtare, pīwakawaka, kiwi and many more.

🏥 We have a purpose-built bird rehabilitation hospital, including dedicated ICU facilities and rehabilitation cages, to provide the best possible care for the birds in our care.

We service the area from the North Shore to Kaiwaka.

🌿 Winter Is Coming to an End… and Spring Is on the Way! 🐦💚

As we head towards the end of winter and into early spring, we usually start to see an influx of native birds coming into our care.

At this time of year, natural food can be harder to find, and we’re seeing quite a few birds arriving underweight and struggling to maintain their condition.

Keep an eye out for native birds around your gardens and lawns, particularly birds that seem unusually quiet, weak, unable to fly, or are sitting in one place for long periods.

If you come across an injured or unwell native bird, please get in touch with us. We’re still taking birds while our new hospital continues to come together, and we’re happy to help where we can.

A little extra awareness at this time of year can make a big difference. 💚

🦉 Throwback Thursday 💚

A little trip down memory lane with this beautiful ruru! Looking back at some of the birds we’ve had the privilege of caring for reminds us just how far Native Nest has come.

From those early days to our new hospital and everything we’re building for the future, it’s pretty special to look back and see the journey.

We’ve always had a soft spot for ruru, and we’re sure there will be plenty more ruru stories to come!

🚜 Making Space for What’s Next 💚

It’s been a big week of hard work around Native Nest!

We’ve been busy with maintenance and clearing some space to make way for two new outdoor aviaries for our birds.

A huge thank you to Phil, who brought along his digger and spent several days helping us get the area prepared. There’s been plenty of digging, clearing and hard work to get everything ready! 💪

It’s exciting to see another part of Native Nest taking shape, and we’re looking forward to sharing more photos with you once the new aviaries are built.

There’s still plenty of work to do, but slowly and surely, it’s all coming together.
