Our recent intake of several Flemish-cross rabbits has meant we’re going through all our food supplies much more quickly, especially pellets.

We’re grateful to share that, with the help of our friends, we were able to rescue seven Flemish-cross rabbits.

These videos show them settling into temporary runs while their permanent indoor runs were being prepared. We didn’t know for sure which rabbits would be coming into our care, so we had to wait and see who arrived, then put together suitable cages once we got them home.

For some of these buns, this may possibly have been the first time they’ve ever had their feet on grass, rather than being kept on wire or wooden flooring. Seeing them experience these simple comforts was incredibly special. Later, once they were feeling comfortable, they all started doing binkies.

These rabbits originally came from a situation where they were being bred for home-kill meat. Thankfully, these seven survived and will now have the chance to live safe, comfortable lives as cherished pets.

All seven are booked in for desexing, microchipping, and vaccinations this week. This is especially important because all five females could be pregnant. They’ll receive veterinary checks and the care they need as soon as possible.

This has not been a cheap intake. The costs are already adding up through veterinary care, vaccinations, microchipping, desexing, food, housing, bedding, and the supplies needed to give them a safe and comfortable start. Caring for seven rabbits at once is a significant commitment, but they deserve the opportunity to begin again.

Sadly, we weren’t able to save all of the rabbits. The others had already been killed by the previous owner before we could reach them. This is heartbreaking, but our focus is now on the seven in our care and giving them the safe and loving future they deserve.

We’re also looking for safe indoor foster homes for rabbits. Foster homes help us say yes to more animals in need while they remain under our care.

🐰 Foster homes needed

These are my boys, Pipkins and Bipkins, who I kept (after a failed adoption sadly) from an intake of five Flemish buns who had been living in large dog carry cages.
At the start of the video, you can see what my boys came in looking like and how they were housed before. At the end, you can see their home now.

We’ve now been told about another group of Flemish x buns that we’d love to help, but to do that we urgently need foster homes.

Fostering is one of the most helpful ways to support rescue work. It gives rabbits a safe, calm place to settle, decompress, and feel secure while they wait for their next step. It also helps us learn more about each bunny’s personality and needs, giving them the best chance of finding the right future home.

Fostering is also a wonderful way to help without taking on a permanent, long-term commitment. The rabbit remains under our care while they’re in foster, and we support you throughout their stay.

We’re looking for safe indoor foster homes where the bunnies can be comfortable, cared for, and given the space and patience they need. If you can offer a foster space, please get in touch.

We’re also incredibly thankful to Happy Rescue NZ for taking in Autumn, a stray bun we brought into our care a month ago.
She’s hopefully going to become a buddy for a male bun already at Happy Rescue. Both rabbits are desexed, vaccinated, and microchipped, so we’re hopeful they’ll soon become a bonded pair looking for a home together.

Every foster home helps us say yes to another animal in need.

Blossom and Buttons are part of the group of 28 guinea pigs who came into our care three weeks ago. Blossom is the adult, Buttons is the little one, and the way they sit together makes us wonder if they may be mother and daughter. Either way, they are absolutely adorable.

When 28 guinea pigs came into our care, we knew it would be a long journey. Three weeks on, we’re still early in that journey, but we have already seen some encouraging progress.

Eleven of the 15 baby boys are now in wonderful foster homes, where they can grow, gain strength, and be ready for desexing when the time comes.

We will also be starting to desex on the six mums, because guinea pigs can become pregnant again very quickly after giving birth. Since they came to us after their babies were already born, we can’t be certain there wasn’t a male with them, so we want to do everything possible to prevent any surprise pregnancies and keep these girls safe.

There is still so much work ahead, but every small step matters. Every pig who finds safety, every foster home that opens its doors, and every donation that comes in helps us keep going.

We’re so grateful for the recent surprise donation from Friends of Animal Charities.

Their generosity has helped us update the cages on one side in our rescue room so the space is better suited to the animals in our care, easier to clean, and much more practical for the day-to-day work that rescue requires.

We’re still making improvements, and we’re taking time to listen to feedback from our volunteers before making the shelf layout permanent.

At the moment, our setup includes 3 cages on the lower level, each able to house a pair, a middle shelf that can be split into two and is currently home to the mums and bubs, and a top level with a 2x4 setup, with the other side being used for storage.

This is what rescue looks like behind the scenes.
It’s vet bills, desexing, food, bedding, cleaning, housing changes, fostering, and constant adjusting to make sure every piggie gets the care they need. Improvements like this might seem small from the outside, but they make a huge difference to how smoothly we can care for the animals who rely on us every day.

And a big thank you to my partner for putting up with helping with all the changes, because who needs spare time anyway XD

Look how lucky these two boys from the Wellington rescue of 40 guinea pigs are. 💚

What an incredibly beautiful homemade cage, and such a loving, thoughtful welcome for them. It’s so moving to see rescued piggies finally land somewhere safe, warm, and so clearly cared for.

We still have 13 guinea pigs from the Wellington rescue group looking for homes, and we are now also looking for indoor foster homes for the young bubs from the recent intake of 28. These little ones need a safe, cosy place to grow until they’re around 4 months old, when they can be de-sexed and prepared for their next step.

Because more than half are boys, many of the babies will eventually be paired into male/female pairs once they’re old enough — so we kindly ask foster homes to please keep in mind that these little ones are temporary visitors while they grow and get ready for their forever homes.

A heartfelt thank you to the two kind people who brought us pellets after our last post 💜💜 Your generosity means so much to us.

Last week we took in 28 guineas, after a situation where a family had a male pair and a female herd, and one male ended up with the females. Sadly, he wasn’t desexed 🤦‍♀️

Desexing is so important — not only for the health and wellbeing benefits, but also to help prevent accidental litters and the stress they can cause for both the animals and their carers.

With so many new little mouths to feed, we’re going through pellets even faster than usual.

Our guinea pig adoption page has been updated, and we’d love to help these little ones find truly good lifelong homes. We currently have around 30 guineas ready to adopt, though we still need to take photos of a couple more. We also have some bunnies available, and the 2 white not-so-kittens are still hoping for their perfect people too.
