MORE AIR ISN’T ALWAYS SAFER FOR TOWING.

Most of us know that towing a loaded horse float with underinflated tyres isn’t a good idea.

But pumping them up extra hard isn’t automatically safer either.

Your tow vehicle’s tyres are designed to work within a specific pressure range. When a loaded float is hitched on, additional weight is placed over the back of the vehicle, so getting that pressure right becomes even more important.

Too low…

The tyre squashes and flexes more than it should.

This creates extra heat and rolling resistance, uses more fuel and can affect your cornering, braking and the tyre’s ability to move water away from underneath it.

Too high…

The tyre becomes harder and stiffer.

Less of the tyre may stay in contact with the road, which can reduce grip, affect braking and wear the centre of the tread faster.

Neither is ideal when you already have the additional weight and movement of a horse float behind you.

Your vehicle may require a higher pressure when towing or carrying a heavy load, especially in the rear tyres—but that doesn’t mean choosing a higher number yourself.

Check the label inside the driver’s door or your vehicle handbook for the manufacturer’s recommended cold tyre pressures.

Some vehicles list one pressure for everyday driving and another for heavier loads or towing.

And don’t use the pressure printed on the side of the tyre as your guide. That is not necessarily the correct operating pressure for your vehicle and load.

Check them before driving, while the tyres are cold, because the pressure naturally increases as the tyres warm up.

Have you ever checked whether your vehicle recommends a different tyre pressure while towing? 👀

Here I am on the side of the motorway fixing a float whose brakes locked on 😅

Luckily, it’s not my float! But I did come to the rescue, made it driveable and towed it home, where we repaired it for her, then towed it back to her storage place.

It just reminded me about our lease floats and how good a service we provide to people who lease and hire with us.

The unpredictable can happen every day. You don’t know what’s going to happen or how it’s going to happen, so I think one of the best services we provide with our hires and leases is our roadside assistance.

We don’t just show up, fix a float or tow it away for you, because in most cases you have horses on board that you need to get somewhere safe or get home.

So we bring a courtesy float. We’ll tow it to you wherever you are in New Zealand, so you can unload your horses from the injured float and onto the safe, sound float to continue on your journey.

You essentially leave us with the problem float, and you get to carry on your merry way! Except for maybe a bit of a wait for us to drive to you.

We then sort the problem and return your lease float to you once it’s repaired.

If you owned your own float and your brakes locked up while you were in Taupō competing, have you ever thought about what might happen? Who’s going to come rescue your horses? How are you going to get your float back to Auckland?

Most tow companies won’t do anything with a float.

When I literally broke down an hour out of Taupo 3 years ago, tow companies couldn’t do anything about the float, especially if it had horses!

And, it was $1500 just to get my ute alone to our place in Westgate.

This is just one of the little bonuses of leasing with us. Yes, ownership is great in its own way, but leasing has such a deeper benefit than you realise.

That repair to your lease float doesn’t cost you anything. If you owned the float, in my friend’s particular case, it would’ve been $850–$950 for the repairs we did.

Plus, you would’ve paid someone to come rescue you and paid for fuel. You probably would’ve had to borrow a friend’s float and pay their gas, or hire another float, find another tow vehicle and someone to tow it.

It all sounds like a nightmare and a very expensive endeavour. And you have to foot the bill!

With that being said, if you’re outside a certain radius, we will charge for gas and mileage on the vehicle, but that’s it.

So someone might say to you, “Why lease when you can finance it for the same price per week or slightly cheaper?”

But with financing, you don’t get our roadside assistance, courtesy floats, free repairs and maintenance, and free warrants and registration.

Plus, with leasing, there are no surprise repair bills when something breaks!

We take the stress & hard work away from a stressful situation, making even the scariest and toughest moments easy 🥰

It’s called a fertiliser spreader… but fertiliser isn’t its only job 🤷🏼‍♀️

Our fully adjustable spreader can be used for:

⚪ Lime
To help raise the pH of acidic soil and support pasture growth.

🌱 Grass seed
For oversowing existing paddocks or reseeding prepared ground.

🌿 Dry fertilisers
Including powdered, granular and prilled products, to supply nutrients your pasture needs.

💩 Pelletised products
Including suitable pelletised organic fertilisers.

Simply set the spreader to suit the product you’re using and away you go.

It’s that easy 😊

What would you use it for at your place?

What actually makes grass green? 🌱

One of the main ingredients is nitrogen.

Nitrogen is one of the nutrients plants need in the largest amounts. Grass absorbs it through its roots, mainly as nitrate and ammonium.

Once inside the plant, nitrogen is used to make:

🌱 Chlorophyll, which captures sunlight so the grass can photosynthesise.

🌱 Amino acids and proteins, which are needed to grow new leaves, roots and shoots. Also what our horses need for their muscle recovery and growth 😍

🌱 Enzymes and DNA, which control growth, repair and the everyday functions of the plant.

When grass isn’t getting enough nitrogen, growth slows down and the pasture can become thin and pale.

You may notice the older leaves turning light green or yellow first. This happens because the plant can move nitrogen out of its older leaves and send it to the younger growth where it is needed most.

So nitrogen helps pasture stay green, produce new leafy growth and recover after it has been grazed.

Too much available nitrogen can push very rapid, lush growth, while nitrogen that the plants can’t use may be lost from the soil through leaching or into the atmosphere.

The goal is not to add as much nitrogen as possible. It is to have enough available for the pasture to grow without creating an unnecessary excess.

But where does the nitrogen in your paddock actually come from?

It doesn’t all arrive in a bag of fertiliser.

There’s a small plant growing in many New Zealand paddocks that has found a way to bring nitrogen in from the air.

We’ll talk about that one next. 👀

Bonus points if it’s something you use on or in your float or fields 😍

Tell us what it is and why you swear by it… we might all discover something we suddenly “need” 🤣

A little did you know… 🤷🏼‍♀️

Kikuyu is an oxalate grass commonly found around Auckland and Northland.

Kikuyu contains oxalates, which attach to calcium in your horse’s digestive system and prevent some of it from being absorbed.

If kikuyu makes up a large part of their diet and that calcium shortfall isn’t correctly balanced, the horse may begin drawing calcium from its own bones.

Over a long period, a serious calcium imbalance can weaken the skeleton.

In uncommon, severe cases, it can cause swelling of the facial and jaw bones, a condition known as “big head disease.”

If your horse is primarily grazing kikuyu, don’t panic or immediately spend the $150 Horselands voucher we’re giving away entirely on calcium. 🤣

(Check our pinned post to enter 😉)

Your horse may already be receiving enough calcium through a properly balanced feed or supplement.

However, if they’ve been grazing mostly kikuyu for a long time, are showing any concerning signs or you’re simply unsure, have a chat with your vet or an equine nutritionist.

They can look at the whole diet, including the pasture, hay, hard feed and supplements, and work out whether anything needs adjusting.

It’s much better to check what your horse is already getting before adding more. 🥰
