Grassroots Vet "We have more to learn from animals, than animals have to learn from us"

18/11/2025

Each year, hundreds of dogs and puppies die of parvovirus in Auckland. The disease is extremely contagious and unvaccinated pups are most at risk.

To reduce the barriers of cost, West Auckland veterinary clinics have teamed up to hold a free vaccination drive for dogs for those struggling financially to vaccinate their dogs. The event will be run by volunteers of the veterinary industry, and has been put together purely through donations. 💞

📍The event will be held on Sunday 23rd November, from 10am to 5pm, at the carpark of Te Pai Centre, Henderson.

The event will run as a "drive-through", with dogs and owners remaining in their vehicle through various stations. Both owner and dog will exit the vehicle only for the administration of the vaccination which is performed by a veterinarian. 🚗

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

- The vaccination drive does NOT include a full veterinary consultation.
- Dogs receiving the vaccine must be over the age of 6 weeks.
- Adult dogs must not have been vaccinated against parvovirus in the last 12 months.
- Dogs must not have had any vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, or lack of appetite in the last 1 week, to receive the parvovirus vaccination.
- Owners must sign a consent form prior to the vaccination.
- Owners must be over 18 years of age.

Dogs not in a vehicle at the event will not be vaccinated. Event staff have the right to decline service at any point.

There is no registration and no costs involved.

My favourite kinds of house calls. Puppy vaccinations. 🐶🐕

This laid back guy breezed through his second set of vaccinations and barely even noticed his microchip being placed as he was too interested in his dental treat!

Please make sure your pups are up to date with their parvovirus vaccinations. For more on this, check out this quick story on the SPCA website: https://www.spca.nz/news-and-events/news-article/parvo-outbreak

Always heart-warming meeting a stoic, friendly, inquisitive and gentle . One of my all time favourite breeds. Had the joy of giving Kodi a full check up, vaccinations, flea & worm treatment plus microchipping today.

Excited to see this big guy grow into a well rounded doggo with his wonderful new family 🧡🧡🧡

Did you know it is a legal requirement to microchip your dog/puppy within 2 months of first registration with the council? Chipping helps to relocate lost pets, but this only works if your pets microchip is also registered on the NZ Companion Animal Register (NZCAR), which your vet can do for you.

A separate registration with the local council (Auckland) is also mandatory before your puppy turns 3 months old, or if you are new to the area. This Registration is easy and can be done online via the Auckland Council website.

Got to reunite with one of my favorite doggos today. Seen this guy through a few big events throughout his first year of life; from surviving parvo to a protracted recovery after multiple fractures in his pelvis after a road traffic accident.

Today he is thriving, barely any noticeable change to his gait or stiffness in his hips as he rolled on the floor with this head half under the couch whilst I attempted to examine him for his annual vaccinations. Just simply the happiest and easy going pup I've had the pleasure of treating. Kudos to his family, they've done such a wonderful job raising him ❤️❤️

Title: Outreach clinic in Sāmoa
11th - 13th December 2023;

Locations: Lotopa, Leauva'a, Tanugamanono

This trip started out as a concept, mainly to go home to Sāmoa and give back. I had managed to talk with a couple of colleagues about this idea over a year ago, and in about 6 months, we were able to put together dates, liaise with Animal Protection Society (APS) and book flights. And as I hadn't been home since 2019, I figured this would be a great time to finally do this "working holiday" people are always talking about.

We were only a small group ; (2 vets, 1 vet tech, my partner, and my nephew) and together with 2 colleagues from APS, which is the local small animal clinic, we were able to desex about 28 animals over an intense 3 day program, where majority of them were early pregnant or on heat.

As a smaller group, we came up against a few logistical challenges but the learning opportunities and experiences were immense and overall positive. We would definitely go back hopefully for a longer period to be able to get through a few more families in need of the vet service. What stood out from the days we were there, was the genuine appreciation you received from families, and their patience in waiting the entire day just to be seen to. No complaints, always in good spirits and humour. I miss that about island life and community.

Grateful for the Village that is my Ohana , for hosting our small group for the week. And of course to my colleagues, who were totally self funded when they came on this trip, for deciding to give this concept a go. And especially to who came through for me at the 11th hour. Grateful for my family :) And not least of all, to my partner for putting up with everything in between, the highs and lows of it all, for capturing all the moments on camera and still be expected to "nurse"; especially since this was an entirely new experience for you too, in more ways than one. ❤️

Excited for what lies ahead for 2024. Both as a mobile vet in Auckland, but to more grassroots type of vet work.

This bold and beautiful girl Harlie came in today with her mama to get her annual vaccination/ boosters done for the year. ✅️

As always, thank you to our new and wonderful clients for reaching out and supporting small mobile vet clinic operators. ♥️🐕🩺 it's always tricky changing over from one clinic to another, but you don't necessarily have to, as we are here to fill in the gaps if you're unable to get to your regular vet.

Send us a message today if you have any vaccination needs, or want to book in for a general or urgent consult.

We operate from Fri - Sunday between the hours of 9am - 5pm.

Look forward to meeting you and your furbabies 😊

Did you know that puppies need at LEAST 2 vaccinations through their first year of life?

The recommended schedule of vaccinations for puppies as recommended by most clinics are:

6-8 weeks old - 1st vaccination
12 weeks old - 2nd vaccination
16 weeks old - 3rd and final puppy vaccination

There are mainly 3 vaccines that your vet may recommend, but the most important one to not miss, is their parvovirus ("Parvo") vaccine. For more information on what "Parvo" is, visit: https://nzva.org.nz/news/parvovirus/

If you would like to book your puppy in for a consultation to have their vaccinations, you can email, text or messenger through and we can help get your little one off to a safe healthy start in life :)
