The Adolescent Phase!

Remi is 8 months old now and she is definitely testing the boundaries.... look at that face!!! 😂

It’s normal for your dog’s behaviour to change as they go through this developmental phase. They can become more ambitious, listen less or start displaying new, frustrating behaviours (such as ignoring your recall cue).

The most important thing you can do to support your pup through this time is to be calm and consistent.

Management is a great tool for preventing behaviours you don’t want, it’s ok to keep your pup on the lead if they’re less able to follow cues out and about.

You can also use a higher rate of reinforcement (aka more treats) to consolidate behaviours they already know and keep your pup focused on you and what’s being asked of them.

It’s also a great time to introduce new training games to keep building your bond and have fun together.

You got this!! 💛

It’s been a busy few weeks here at Sniffers as we get into summer training with our clients.

Poppy is 18months and has been learning all about impulse control and how to channel her prey drive into training games.

By using consistent positive reinforcement for interactions with her humans (instead of the environment) Poppy’s focus has transformed and she’s naturally offering behaviours that work for us, because she’s finding it so rewarding!

Way to go Poppy! 🙌🏼🌟

Introducing Stella! 💛
Stella is a confident and intelligent pup who has been chosen by her family to do a special job. She is training to work as a Therapy Dog for her human brother and she is already showing that she has some wonderful skills with him. Before Stella is ready to take on her role, we are focusing on normal puppy development so she understands how to navigate the world safely and happily!
Keep up the awesome work Stella! 💛🌟

BENNY 💛
For some dogs, the world can be a scary place. Benny had his fifth training walk today. We’re working on his anxiety, and wow, what a change in this doggo. Desensitisation and Counter Conditioning protocols are such effective tools for transforming fear and reactivity. With time and consistency, you can achieve significant change.
Soooo proud of you Benny. You are such a courageous pup 🌟🐶🙌🏼

ENRICHMENT FUN!! (Sound ON!) .
It’s so east to forget that when we walk our dogs, the goal is to exercise their bodys AND their minds.

Obsidian has a thing about digging for (and talking to) sticks at the beach. Today I stood for about 20 minutes while he did this because it’s his walk and he was choosing his fun.

When it was time to go home, I could see that he found it really hard to leave his ‘self designated enrichment game’ and this reinforced for me the value of this activity for him, so I'll make sure to factor it into our weekly adventures because it clearly adds to his sense of happiness and wellbeing.

Remi is growing up F.A.S.T!! she’s coming up six months now and is already full of ‘The Sass’ 😈😅🙈

We have been training regularly to build a good repertoire of cooperation behaviours, and her family have done a magnificent job of consolidating these in a rewarding and safe environment at home.

Today we took those skills out for a spin on a training walk. We focused on building a simple impulse control step into her play by applying ‘Premack Principle’. This is where we use a high probability behaviour to reinforce a low probability behaviour. For Remi, this meant her high drive to play with the plastic flowers (her choice of toy btw!) motivated her to sit first (low probability when excited), so we would throw the flowers for her to chase (reinforcement) without her jumping up to get them first (desired result!!).

Remi was offering a sit after a few goes because she could see the value of her self control, and how she could use it to train the humans to throw things for her! 😬😉

This little lady is Bo. She was the only pup in her litter to survive and despite an incredibly hard start, she is an absolute bundle of joy and confidence. I had so much fun showing Bo how to learn with the clicker, and we managed to introduce three new foundation behaviours in the first session! What an amazing wee soul you are Bo, I’ll be seein ya soon 💛💫🐶

Winston and Bella are working together to earn treats, which in turn is helping Winston with his confidence.

In the past, Bella has always been the first to offer a behaviour and get a treat, which has excluded Winston from getting the reinforcement he needs to feel optimistic about cooperating.

By getting them to work as a team, and using verbal praise as a reinforcement bridge for Bella if she lies down first, both dogs get their treat at the same time for offering the same behaviour.
Go team!! 🙌💛

Winston is 7months old and super smart. He’s still a teenager, so he gets excited a LOT and likes to jump up. We decided to retrain this by teaching Winston to offer an incompatible behaviour (we chose ‘sit’) instead. We called Winston and then promptly asked for a sit as soon as he arrived. The old behaviour of jumping was interrupted, and replaced with a sit. If he jumped up then sat, we simply reset (to avoid building an unwanted behaviour chain) then called him again. Winston caught on in no time and loved earning treats for this new routine. Well done Winston, you are totes a dog-star 🌟

Young Kevin is learning how to earn treats. Using a marker (in Kev’s training we're using a clicker) gives your pup a clear indication of when they’ve got the task right. Pair that click with a reinforcer (Kev likes to work for food treats) and now you have a clear and simple training language which motivates your pup to offer behaviours they feel good about!
Keep up the awesome work Kev, what a good boy! 💛
