Choosing fish for a small tank isn’t as simple as “pick the smallest ones”.

Some fish stay small… but they’re super active.

Others might be calm, but don’t like being in tight spaces.

That’s where people run into issues later - the tank just doesn’t suit the fish.

A better way to think about it is: “Will this fish be comfortable here long-term?”

For example:
• Bettas do well on their own in smaller tanks
• Guppies are active, so they need a bit of room to move
• without adding load

If you’re not sure, ask us before adding.

If you’ve been thinking about getting a tank…

you don’t need to start big.

A small tank is a good way to learn without overcomplicating things.

A lot of people get stuck here - they either go too big too fast, or overthink it and don’t start at all.

A small setup keeps things simple while you figure out what works for you.

Start simple:
• Basic setup
• A few fish that suit the space
• Easy maintenance routine you can actually stick to
• Keep it manageable while you learn how everything behaves together

What people don’t always realise is…
you can always adjust later.

Add more plants.
Refine the layout.
Upgrade the setup when you’re ready.

You’re not locking yourself in, you’re just starting in a smarter place.

Most people test their water when something feels off.

The water looks a bit cloudy…
The fish are acting differently…
or something just doesn’t seem quite right.

By then, something has usually already shifted in the background.

Testing regularly helps you catch small changes early.

Keep an eye out for:
• Rising nitrates from overfeeding or waste building up
• pH slowly drifting after water changes or new additions
• Temperature changes that stress fish without you realising
• Ammonia spikes in newer or overstocked tanks

The tricky part is, these changes don’t usually happen all at once - they creep in slowly.

Quick tip 👍
Test weekly and keep a simple record. You’re not just looking at one result - you’re watching a pattern over time.

That’s where the real insight is.

One of the reasons people like small tanks…

They’re manageable.

You’re not dealing with a huge setup - just a small space you can keep on top of.

It’s usually just:
• A weekly water change
• A quick check of parameters
• Keeping an eye on your fish

Once you’re in the habit, it’s pretty straightforward.

If your tank feels a bit flat, it’s usually missing contrast.

Everything ends up the same height, same colour, same density.

That’s why it doesn’t stand out.

Try mixing things up:
• Tall plants at the back, shorter in front
• Light substrate with darker features
• One open area, one more filled

It gives your tank depth - even when it’s small.

Just one more fish” is usually how overcrowding starts 😅

In a small tank, that one extra fish can affect:
• Water quality
• Oxygen levels
• Stress between fish

It adds up quicker than people expect.

A good rule is that if it already feels full… it probably is.
