A water change is not simply a matter of removing old water and replacing it directly from the tap.

Tap water may contain chlorine or chloramine, both of which can be harmful to fish and the beneficial bacteria supporting the aquarium. The new water should also be prepared at a suitable temperature for the tank.

AF Water Conditioner is designed to neutralise chlorine and bind heavy metals in tap water. Follow the instructions carefully and calculate the dose based on the amount of new water being treated.

For marine aquariums, replacement saltwater must also be mixed and checked correctly before it is added.

If you’re heading away for Labour Weekend, make the aquarium part of the plan before you lock the front door.

Healthy adult fish may cope with a short break from feeding, but this depends on their species, age, health and setup. If someone else is feeding them, portion the food in advance rather than leaving instructions to “give them a little bit.” One person’s little bit can be an impressive amount of fish food.

An automatic feeder can also help, but set it up and test it for several days before you leave. Check exactly how much food it dispenses and make sure the food stays dry.

Setting up a tank isn’t just about filling it with water and adding fish. A healthy aquarium starts with cycling the tank - letting beneficial bacteria establish themselves to keep your fish safe and happy. It may take a few weeks, but patience now means fewer problems later.

Think of it like planting a garden: you wouldn’t put seeds in barren soil and expect them to thrive immediately. The same goes for fish. While you wait, you can set up decorations, plants, and filtration, so your tank looks amazing from day one.

A brown filter sponge may not be particularly attractive, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be replaced.

Filter media provides a home for beneficial bacteria that help process ammonia and nitrite. Replacing all the media or scrubbing it until it looks new can remove a large part of that biological filtration.

When reusable media becomes clogged, gently rinse it in water removed from the aquarium. The aim is to remove loose debris and restore the flow - not turn the sponge white again.

A working filter is far more useful than a spotless one.

There’s nothing wrong with giving your aquarium a spring clean. The problem begins when “a quick tidy” turns into stripping the whole tank apart.

Your aquarium relies on beneficial bacteria to help process fish waste. These bacteria live throughout the system, particularly in the filter media and on surfaces inside the tank.

Cleaning everything at once can remove too much of that established bacteria and leave the aquarium less stable than it was before.

Clean what needs attention, complete an appropriate partial water change and leave the rest for another day.

The tank should look better after a clean - but it doesn’t need to look brand new.

Overfeeding is one of the most common mistakes ❌. Uneaten food pollutes water 💧 and can harm fish 🐠. Feed the right amount for each species and stick to a schedule 🕒.
