Dogsport New Zealand Inc

Dogsport New Zealand Inc Dogsport is a dog training club for the owners of European Working breeds who want to compete in tri

Our membership is dedicated to utilising & preserving the temperament and proud working heritage of European working breeds such as German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermanns and Belgian Shepherds through the world wide sport of Schutzhund (also known as Dogsport)

Dogsport is an ideal means by which to demonstrate your dog's trainability, intelligence & utility. It offers breeders a rigorous means

to measures any potential breeding prospect’s genetic quality because this sport reveals a great deal about a working dog's mental stability, endurance, structural efficiencies, ability to scent, willingness to work and courage. Dogsport trials involve preparing the dog and handler for the “triathlon” of Tracking, Obedience and Protection exercises. This sport offers an opportunity for dog owners to train their dog & compete against each other for recognition of both the handler's ability as a trainer & the dog's ability to perform as required. It is a sport enjoyed by persons of varied professions, who join together in a camaraderie born of their common interest in training and competing with their dogs. Please enjoy surfing our pages and if you’d like to learn more about this fascinating sport, please visit our contacts page and get in touch with one of our committee members or zone representatives.

At Dogsport NZ, our focus is always on working towards the IGP standard, not just in the exercises we train, but in how we develop our dogs and ourselves as handlers.

Strong performances are built on strong foundations, and those foundations come from a deliberate and consistent balance of support and challenge. Too much challenge can erode confidence; too much support can limit growth. The art lies in finding the right balance for each dog and handler team.

When we get that balance right, we build more than skills. We build trust, confidence, resilience, and ultimately a dog’s self-efficacy, their belief that they can work through challenges and succeed. At the same time, the handler learns to become a clearer communicator, better leader, and stronger teammate.

Last week we had 16 dogs on the field, and what stood out wasn’t just the training. It was the collaboration. The encouragement. The coaching. The willingness to celebrate successes and help each other work through challenges. The support for one another was tangible, and it’s that culture that helps both dogs and handlers continue to grow.

One team, many journeys, all working towards the same standard.

A smaller group on the field today meant plenty of opportunities to focus on what matters, having fun with our dogs and building the relationship that sits at the heart of everything we do.

While one of our members was fine-tuning preparations for their IGP2, others with younger and more novice dogs made the most of having the equipment out to try a few new exercises and expose their dogs to different parts of the sport in a relaxed, supportive environment.

That’s one of the great things about club training. Whether you’re preparing for a title or simply laying the foundations, every session is a chance to learn, experiment, and enjoy the journey with your dog.

Progress is incremental, and it should always be fun along the way. 🐾

🐾 FOCUS UNDER DISTRACTION 🐾

It’s easy to get engagement when it’s quiet.

No pressure, no dogs, no noise.

But dogsport doesn’t happen there.

It happens in busy fields, around other dogs, movement, scent and noise, and this is where focus really counts.

For IGP and club training, a dog that can stay mentally with the handler under distraction is essential. Not just for performance, but for clarity, safety, and consistency in the work.

🧠 Ivan Balabanov principle

We’re not trying to manage or correct dogs into focus.

We’re building dogs that:
👉 understand the game
👉 are motivated
👉 choose the handler because that’s where success lives

When it’s done well, distraction becomes irrelevant, the value sits with the handler.

🔥 What we’re focusing on at training:

* Clear engagement first
* Building value in the handler
* Layering distraction gradually
* Keeping dogs confident and winning

💬 The goal isn’t a dog that copes in distraction,
it’s a dog that chooses the handler every time.

Great to see teams building this at training, connection, clarity and support across the field 👊🐾

Such a great reminder of why we do this… watching one of our younger dogs absolutely loving the work, fully engaged with her handler, confident, free, and connected. 🐾

That harmony doesn’t happen by chance, it’s built through clarity, fairness, and responsibility.

Under both IGP rules and WGSDCA guidelines, the responsibility always sits with the handler, to guide, to support, and ultimately to lift the dog. The dog is never at fault; it’s up to us to show them the picture in a way they can understand and succeed in.

When we get it right, we don’t just see performance, we see joy, trust, and a dog who wants to be there.

That’s the real win. 💛

There’s something special about the early days with a puppy… 🐾

At Dogsport NZ, the work we do with our young dogs isn’t about rushing into routines or perfecting behaviours. It’s about building something far more powerful first, confidence and connection.

Confidence comes from creating safe, positive experiences where the puppy learns that the world is a place they can explore, engage with, and succeed in. Every new surface, sound, and environment becomes an opportunity to grow bravery and resilience.

Connection is the glue. It’s the relationship between handler and dog, built through play, engagement, and shared experiences. It’s the puppy choosing you, not because they have to, but because they want to.

When we take the time to develop these foundations, everything else becomes easier. Training becomes clearer. Communication becomes smoother. The dog works with you, not just for you.

And perhaps most importantly, we create dogs who are not only capable in sport, but balanced, confident, and secure in themselves.

That’s the purpose of the work. Slow it down, build it right, and the rest will follow. 🌿🐕

One of these is different to the others 🤣

We’re working with some of our adolescent dogs on building confidence and reducing conflict, resulting in a stronger, fuller bite and clear head!

We’d like to acknowledge our 2025 trial sponsor Rolly Canine Rolly Canine

And, as the countdown begins to our summer trial in November, the focus is sharpening 🔥

Across the field, members are leaning right into the foundations, breaking down each part of the routine to show our dogs the finer details of the picture… so they can confidently build the whole.

Today was a great reminder that progress lives in the small things.
Focus. Position-Precision. Movement.
Steps one to three, done with intent.

Even better was the energy, connection, and shared support within the group. Coaching, encouraging, problem-solving together… this is what makes our Dogsport NZ community so special.

The work we do now becomes the performance we see later. 🐾

🐾 BH Foundations in Focus 🐾

With a trial planned for later in the year, today’s session was about walking through the BH routine step by step—clarity, structure, and purpose.

Each dog was then worked individually on a specific element of the routine, based on where they’re at in their development. No rushing, no shortcuts, just thoughtful training.

The basic position at the left side of the handler is the cornerstone of the BH. It underpins heeling, transitions, focus, and teamwork, and it’s something every dog builds over time.

Every dog in the group is at a different stage and that’s exactly how it should be. Progress looks different for each team, and today was about meeting the dog in front of you and strengthening the foundations that everything else is built on.

Solid work, patient handling, and great attention to detail from everyone today 👏
