Every superhero wears a cape… 🩸🐾
some just happen to have four legs.

When a critically ill patient needs a blood transfusion in the middle of the night, there isn’t always time to wait for blood products to arrive. That’s where our incredible donor dogs come in.

Many of our nurses have generously volunteered their own dogs to help save the lives of patients in need. At a moment’s notice, these furry heroes can be brought into the clinic to donate blood and give another pet a fighting chance.

We’re so grateful to our dedicated team and their amazing dogs who help make life-saving transfusions possible when every minute counts.

Meet Bond 💙

This lovely boy recently came into see us needing urgent surgery after suffering from a twisted stomach (GDV) — a life-threatening condition that requires immediate treatment.

Despite feeling very unwell, Bond was the definition of a gentle giant throughout his stay with us. The nurses completely fell in love with him, and it’s easy to see why 🐾

Thanks to the quick actions of his family and our dedicated veterinary team, Bond underwent emergency surgery and is now on the road to recovery.

We’re so glad you’re feeling better, Bond, and can soon get back to playing with your beloved tennis balls 🎾💙

We only want to see you back here for cuddles and pats — and we’ll happily trade tennis balls for the delicious rocky road you brought the team 🍫🐶

We are currently looking for an experienced Locum Veterinary Nurse to join our friendly and supportive team on a casual/locum basis.

Based in Manukau, Auckland, we are a busy emergency and after-hours clinic providing overnight and weekend care to pets when their regular vet clinics are closed.

We are specifically looking for someone who is available to assist with:
• Weekend shifts
• Night shifts
• Potential additional cover shifts when required
Our clinic is fully equipped with:
• Digital radiography
• In-house laboratory equipment
• Ultrasound
• Endoscopy
• Dedicated surgery facilities
• Experienced emergency veterinarians and nursing team

We’re incredibly proud of the team culture we’ve built at MAHVC. We have a genuinely supportive group of vets, nurses and admin staff who work hard, support each other, and maintain a great sense of humour — because we all know after-hours can be unpredictable at times!
We would love to hear from nurses who:

• Have previous veterinary nursing experience
• Are confident working in a fast-paced environment
• Can remain calm under pressure
• Enjoy emergency/critical care nursing
• Are reliable, flexible and team-focused

Previous emergency nursing experience is beneficial, but not essential for the right person with strong general nursing skills and a great attitude.

This ANZAC Day, we honour the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who have served our country—past and present. Their dedication allows us the freedoms we are grateful for every day.

At Manukau After Hours we’re also reminded of the important role animals have played alongside our servicemen and women—offering companionship, courage, and support in times of need.

With severe weather on the way, now is the time to think ahead and make a plan - for both you and your animals 🐾

Cyclone Vaianu is expected to impact the North Island on Sunday, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain, and the potential for coastal inundation.

Animals are part of the whānau - and emergencies can be incredibly stressful if you’re not prepared. A little planning now can make a big difference when it matters most.

PREPARE WITH THESE STEPS:
🚨 Prepare them for possible evacuation - have food, medication, leads, carriers, and any essentials ready to go
🚨Make sure their identification details (like microchip information on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register) are up to date
🚨Have a plan for where they will go if you need to leave quickly
🚨If you have livestock or horses in paddocks near waterways that have the potential to flood (streams, rivers etc.), move them to
higher ground.
🚨Ask for help early if needed.

Remember, keep animals away from flood water. It may be contaminated with biological waste and chemicals.
