**SMALL PORTION. BIG PURPOSE. LET’S TALK OFFAL. 🫀**
When you’re feeding raw, it’s easy to focus on the meat. But organs deserve their place in the bowl too.
Offal brings a concentrated source of nutrients that muscle meat alone doesn’t provide in the same amounts. Liver, for example, supplies vitamin A, B vitamins, iron and copper. Other organs contribute their own mix of nutrients.
**So what does 80/10/10 actually mean?**
The traditional prey model ratio is:
🥩 80% muscle meat
🦴 10% edible bone
🫀 10% organs, typically split into 5% liver and 5% another organ, such as kidney or spleen.
One detail that often gets missed: **heart counts as muscle meat in this model.** It doesn’t replace the liver or other organ portion.
And while 80/10/10 is a useful starting framework, those percentages alone don’t guarantee a complete and balanced diet.
**Know what’s in the mix.**
A raw blend containing meat, fruit and vegetables won’t necessarily include organs or provide everything your dog needs. Check the ingredients and whether the food is intended as a complete diet or for complementary feeding.
If organs are missing, adding the right amount can help address that gap. But adding offal alone won’t automatically balance the whole meal.
Start gradually. More isn’t better: too much can upset digestion and, over time, supply excessive amounts of certain nutrients.
Dogs with medical conditions may need a different approach, so any dietary changes should follow their veterinary advice.
**At RAWCO, we believe feeding with intention starts with understanding the bowl.**
