Last week was all go on the farm đźšś

The students did an awesome job clearing a huge woodpile ready for the new race, while fencing work continued out the back near the wetland planting area.

Great to see so much progress happening across the farm.

It was great to have the horticulture students from Te Haikura a Kiwa (formerly James Cook High) out on the farm this week.

The students checked on the trees they had previously planted, explored the native forest, and got stuck in helping remove lane fencing as part of our new farm development.

There is something special about seeing young people reconnect with the land and be part of projects that will continue to grow for years to come. We appreciate all the hard work and enthusiasm they brought with them for the day 👏

Donald’s Farm was also incredibly fortunate last week to host a large group from Conservation Volunteers New Zealand.

The team spent the day planting trees, shrubs and grasses along the stream, contributing to important restoration work in and around our waterways. Their focus on growing, nurturing and planting native species plays a vital role in helping restore and protect our natural environment.

It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout and hands-on impact across the property. A big thank you to everyone involved for their energy, commitment and care for the land.

We have been doing some work to improve one of our key laneways here at Donald’s Farm.

This track was fairly steep and often suffered from erosion during high rainfall events. It had also become slippery and unsafe for people walking up and down, while not being ideal for cow movement and lameness prevention either.

We are smoothing out the grade to make it safer and easier for both people and stock, and once complete we’ll be replanting the hedge alongside the track.

Always looking at ways to improve the farm for the future!

What an incredible day at Donald’s Farm last Tuesday 🌱

We were lucky enough to welcome students from Takanini School who spent the day planting trees and flaxes they had propagated themselves. Seeing the care, enthusiasm and pride the students brought with them was truly inspiring.

With over 700 plants now growing at Donald’s Farm, this project is helping create a lasting impact for the environment and future generations.

A huge thank you to all of the students and teachers involved, along with Karen from Trees for Survival Charitable Trust for making the day such a success. We loved having you all on the farm and look forward to watching these plants thrive for years to come.

The rising two-year heifers have arrived back home to Donald’s Farm after grazing off farm at Ararimu.

Safe to say they were pretty happy to be back. These heifers will join the main herd and begin calving in July.

The herd has officially finished being milked for the season at Donalds Farm.

It is also the end of an era for our Farm Manager, Sam, who will be leaving us at the end of May.

We have been extremely fortunate to have Sam as part of the Donald Farm team. His knowledge, dedication, and leadership have had a huge impact not only on the farm itself, but also on the many students and visitors who have spent time here over the years.

Thank you, Sam, for all of your hard work and commitment. We wish you and your family all the very best for the future.

A great hands-on session for the Intro to Agriculture group out on the farm.

The team scanned tags, weighed and drenched the yearlings while gaining valuable practical experience working with stock.

The new yards are still under construction, so we improvised with pallets and gates - proving that farming is all about adapting and getting the job done. Great teamwork from everyone involved.

Had a fantastic planting day with Te Haikura A Kiwa, formerly James Cook School last week. It was great to see the students planting trees they have grown themselves back at school.

A big thank you to Karen Opie and the Trees for Survival Charitable Trust for facilitating the day and supporting the next generation in conservation and environmental care.

We appreciate everyone involved and look forward to seeing these plants thrive on the farm. 🌱

A productive day out on the farm with the hedges getting a fresh trim.

The students took the opportunity to explore what was revealed underneath, discovering fungi growth and rabbit burrows hidden in the shelter of the hedgerows. It was a great hands-on learning experience in understanding the ecosystem at work.

The new pasture paddock is also coming away well in this warm weather, showing strong establishment and healthy growth already.
