🏠 𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙚𝙩𝙨 𝙨𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧 𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙨 - Atlas (a sleek Saluki) has found his happy place in the sunshine, looking out for furry visitors while having his laser and massage session. Atlas has had an interesting life, originally a street dog in Bahrain, he was adopted by his wonderful Mum who returned to Canada with him, and they relocated to NZ a few years ago. They have recently moved house and it's greyt to be helping him settle into his new home with therapeutic massage & laser therapy.

❤️ 𝘼 𝙝𝙪𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙠 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙤 𝘼𝙩𝙡𝙖𝙨 for donating some of his super stylish and warm winter coats for Greyhounds in foster care. I have passed these onto Mayhounds last weekend while volunteering at their Pat-n-Chat in Takapuna.

🐩𝙄𝙑𝘿𝘿, 𝙖 𝙏𝙖𝙞𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 2 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙜𝙞𝙚'𝙨 🐕 Both Maggie's have Intervertebral Disc Disease of the Cervical Vertebra in their neck.
🐩 14𝙮𝙧 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙜𝙞𝙚, 𝙖 𝙩𝙤𝙮 𝙥𝙤𝙤𝙙𝙡𝙚 was diagnosed (C3-C5 disc protrusions) a few years ago after experiencing severe pain every time she moved her head.
🐕 6𝙮𝙧 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙜𝙞𝙚, 𝙖 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙮𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 is recently diagnosed (C3-C7 disc narrowing) after experiencing similar painful episodes.

🩺 𝙄𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 included pain relief, strict rest and confinement before being cleared for rehab exercises.
🚨 𝙇𝙖𝙨𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙮 along the nerve roots of the spinal cord has been beneficial in providing pain relief, reducing inflammation and improving circulation.

👋 𝙍𝙚𝙜𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧 𝙢𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 help keep these ladies comfortable and active.
🐩 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙜𝙞𝙚 (𝙣𝙤𝙬 14𝙮𝙧𝙨) improved so much over the years - from severe thoracic kyphosis with very stiff neck, shoulders and trapezius to smoothing out to a flat table top spine, improved gait, range or motion and above all - comfort and relatively pain free.
🏋‍♀️ How cute is she - doing her gym exercises? Currently Maggie is taking it easy after a recent bout of health issues including a recent Cushings Disease diagnosis. Maggie is under the excellent care of Onewa Road Veterinary Hospital and ARC Vets Neurology.

🐕 𝙎𝙤 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙜𝙞𝙚, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 6𝙮𝙧 𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙮𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 being her smootchy, happy self again after her couple of sessions of laser therapy, massage and gentle stretches. Maggie, the greyhound is under the expert care of St Lukes Veterinary Centre.

🏠 𝙃𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 have also been beneficial, such has raising food & water bowls, walking on no-slip surfaces, sleeping on supportive orthopaedic bed and using a harness instead of a collar on walks.

🐾 𝙇𝙤𝙬 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙮𝙡𝙚: A low impact lifestyle is recommended for both Maggie's. This involves limiting anything that puts extra pressure on her neck or back such as jumping on/off furniture, rough play with other dogs, use of a collar and leash, high impact exercise such as chasing a ball/frisbee at high speed or playing tug of war type games.

🐾 Using doggie stairs to allow Maggie to safely get on and off the bed or furniture and into/out
of the car.
🐾 Both Maggie's are kept at a good body condition and not allowed to become overweight as this further stresses the intervertebral discs and surrounding structures.

𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙣𝙚𝙪𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 "𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙛𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙨" 𝙩𝙤 𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙮𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧:
✴️ Back/ neck pain
✴️ Arched back (kyphosis)
✴️ Acute/uncontrolled vocalization, yelping
✴️ Wobbliness/ weakness in limbs/ tripping
✴️ Stiff/ choppy walking gait, or ataxia (drunken gait),

✨️ Celebrating the life of gorgeous Brandi who unexpectedly passed away on her 7th Birthday last week following a very sudden illness. Thank you to her devoted Mum, Dad and family for an amazing retirement and fabulous home filled with so much love, adventures, lots of treats, a stunning wardrobe and non-stop cuddles 🥰 Brandi is also Dolly's half-sister. 🕺𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙫𝙮 - 𝙈𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙖 𝙇𝙪𝙭𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 (𝙈𝙋𝙇) 🦵 Meet Theo, gorgeous cavoodle currently on his rehab journey following his surgery at ARC Vets to correct Medial Patella Luxation (MPL) in his right knee (stifle). MPL occurs mainly in small breed dogs when the patella (kneecap) slips out of it's smooth "groove", instead of riding up & down it.

👋 𝙊𝙪𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙩-𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙝𝙖𝙗 𝙨𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙙𝙚:
✅️ Gait analysis
✅️ Goniometry - checking the progress of the extension and flexion of all his limb joints (we check his surgery limb and compensatory limbs)
✅️ SpectraVET Therapeutic Lasers therapy
✅️ Warm-up's & PROM prior to strength training
✅️ Massage and lymphatic drainage
❄️ On occasion we have also used cryotherapy (ice pack) during of the session, especially in the early stages of rehab to help alleviate any additional inflammation, swelling and pain (cryotherapy and laser therapy work well together)

🏊‍♂️ Soon Theo will be progressing to hydrotherapy to further increase his strength and muscle mass in his surgery leg.

Some clinical signs of dogs with a Patella Luxation:
✴️ When the dog's running, you may see intermittent skipping, and/or
✴️ One of the hind limbs flicks out, or
✴️ Dog may be running on 3 legs - then returns back to "normal"
