Everyone will be no doubt looking forward to dry off and having a breather..and a lie in!
Remember if feeding fodder beetโ€ฆ.transition, transition, transition!

๐Ÿ„Double check the basics to avoid costly acidosis issues: slow increases, steady breaks fences and plenty of fibre to keep cows settled.
๐Ÿ„At this stage of the season we often see down cows that have acidosis combined with metabolic issues due to the low calcium and phosphorus in fodder beet.

Remember we are just a phone call away if you need some help or advice!

Now is the time to really look at cow condition. This is probably the single biggest thing you can do now to help your herdโ€™s reproductive performance next year.
โžก๏ธ The herd average is good information but individual cow data is critical
โžก๏ธ This month you can tailor what you do with what cows - dry off early/ once a day / preferential feed to lift the light cows so they reach their target BCS at calving
โžก๏ธ Donโ€™t forget the first lactation heifers have a target BCS of 5.5 for calving

Call us if you want a herd BCS done - all the dairy vets vet and tech team are BCS accredited ๐Ÿ˜Š

Big focus this month on Milk Quality reviews with our clients. We have a big proportion of our clients using selective dry cow strategies; many that have been doing it for โ€˜many years now.
We have so much data available (herd testing, clinical records, culture results) to make really informed decisions at this stage of the season.

โžก๏ธAntibiotic for the cows in the herd that need it
โžก๏ธTeat sealant for all cows to prevent infections in the dry period.

โ˜‘๏ธ A solid mastitis prevention plan without using unnecessary antibiotic treatment.

Autumn trace element testing

๐Ÿ“Š Trace elements to assess are copper, cobalt(b12) and selenium. Iodine is also really important, especially if on kale over winter.

๐Ÿ„ Liver biopsies give accurate indications of the cows storage of these trace elements - this is really important going into winter with diet changes and massive foetal demands on the cow.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Trace element testing of youngstock now is also really useful - it gives feedback on how your trace element supplementation plan is working and if any changes are needed.

Organise your autumn trace element testing and set yourself up for healthy calves and healthy cows come spring!
