Attention all
Here we must put an apology , we have no issue in writing a public apology,When we are in the wrong. Therefore we
regrettably apologize to Waihao Downs School and their students/ families@ for any negativity projected due to our postings when Incorrect information was shared.
Waihao Downs school was sharing the post of the "Vermin Sermon “This is NOT an event organized by the school themselves but another community organization. This event is sadly still happening!

This past 24 hours has certainly shed some light as to how people feel about these sorts of things and its really fantastic that many people wanted to be heard. While we want discussion we do not want people being threatened or wrongly accused.
This is about education and being proactive with conversations on how we can join together to reduce numbers responsibility and humanely.
ONE thing we can all likely agree on is that this is made worse by bad pet ownership. Those who do not desex, those who let cats breed constantly and then dump them rurally.There should be strict punishments for such people.
We of course would love to see cats removed from the predator list entirely.
One thing you all should know is we desex every animal that comes in. We also microchip every animal and have people who work trapping on farms to help reduce the numbers. Like cats or not we are doing our bit.

LET IT BE KNOWN — WE WILL NOT BACK DOWN.

We will continue to stand against school fundraising events — and the so-called “Vermin Sermon — that promote the hunting and killing of animals for entertainment or competition.

This is an extremely heated topic on both sides, and in some areas it is getting completely out of control. There is genuine anger and, sadly, outright hatred being directed towards animal rescues.

But I have to ask: WHY?

What exactly are we doing that is so wrong?

We are all well aware that we cannot save every animal. Those of us working in rescue see death far more regularly than most people could ever imagine. We know the reality. We see suffering. We see neglect. We see animals that cannot be saved.

But we also see the lives that can be saved.

Across New Zealand, rescues and animal welfare organisations are putting enormous amounts of time, money and effort into reducing unwanted animal numbers through desexing, microchipping, vaccinations, education and responsible ownership.

So why are we so concerned about these particular events?

Because we believe teaching children that hunting and killing animals is something to compete over or have fun doing is completely the wrong message.

What kind of lesson are we giving children when an animal simply being on a piece of land can make it a target?

Not every animal is vermin.

Not every animal needs to die simply because it is outside.

And with so many beloved pets going missing, we have every right to be concerned about the possibility of someone's family pet being caught up in these events.

Just because an animal is on the land does not mean it needs to die.

There is another way.

Work with rescues. Work with animal welfare groups. Work with your communities.

Don't make killing the solution.
Many communities have received help from rescues and animal welfare people over the years. We should be working together, not creating further division.

We are not going anywhere.

We will continue to speak up.

We will continue to advocate for animals.

We will continue to educate.

And we will continue to ask whether there are better, more humane solutions.

CAT PEOPLE — STAND UP.

Because if we stay silent, these types of events could become normalised and spread into more towns and more communities.

Today it might be Vermin

Tomorrow it could be someone's missing much loved pet.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

We can do better than this
Everything has a right to live and killing should not be a sport.

Choose education. Choose compassion. Choose working together — not killing for competition. 🐾

Adoption Oamaru

Vincent or Vinny as we call him is waiting patiently for his forever home. He is one of the most special cats that his foster parents have had so far and that says a lot! He can be shy at first glance but as soon as you give him some pats on his head he will melt into your arms. He loves other cats so would be best suited to a home with someone he can play with. He loves cuddles and you can often find him snuggled into your bed. He would be best suited as an indoor cat as he can be a bit shy and prefers a sunny spot on the couch that the grass. He will make a perfect cat to whoever chooses him.

🐾 Luna — 7 months old
Meet sweet Luna 💕
Luna is a beautiful 7-month-old girl who has blossomed into such a loving, affectionate little cat.
She absolutely loves company and pats and will happily come and sit beside you when she wants some attention. She's the kind of cat who just wants to be near her people. 🥹
Luna isnt overly fond of being picked up, but she has plenty of affection to give when she's allowed to come to you on her own terms.
During the day, Luna is quite the little sleepyhead and loves curling up on the bed for a good snooze. Then once nighttime arrives, she's ready to play — especially with her foster brother Shadow! 🐾

She can be adopted on her own, but Luna and Shadow have formed a lovely bond and would absolutely love to stay together if the right home came along. ❤️

🏡 Luna is looking for a loving, patient forever home where she can continue being the affectionate little companion she has become.

Shadow is an approximately 9-month-old boy who has come such a long way during his time in foster care.
When Shadow first arrived, he was an incredibly shy boy who preferred to hide away and watch the world from a safe spot. With patience, love and plenty of time, he's gained so much confidence and is now showing his playful and affectionate personality. 🥹
Shadow still likes to hide away during the day, where he feels safest, but don't let that fool you — once nighttime comes around, he comes alive! He loves playing with Luna and exploring, and he's become much more comfortable being around people.
He's a gentle boy who needs a family willing to give him a little time to settle in and trust them. Once he feels safe, you'll see what a sweet little guy he really is. ❤️
Shadow can be adopted on his own, but he and Luna have developed a really lovely friendship and would absolutely love to stay together if possible.
🏡 Shadow is looking for a calm, patient forever home where he can continue building his confidence and be loved for the special little boy he is.

So upset right now cat in care has broken its leg and needs amputation. Vet bills are killing us financially right now and we are sinking to a point theres serious risk of us closing permanently, there are 2 x animal hunts in areas we work hard and closely with community . Feel absolutely broken and defeated with all going on‼️
Rescue is exhausting and financially crippling.‼️

🚨 I AM DISGUSTED.

I cannot understand how we have reached a point in New Zealand where cats are being included on predator lists and animal-hunting competitions are being brought into school communities.

These are not just numbers on a predator list. Cats are living, breathing companion animals. They are family members to countless New Zealanders, and many are already vulnerable, abandoned, lost or waiting for rescue.

What message are we sending our children when we normalise the idea of hunting animals as a competition?

There is a HUGE difference between teaching children about conservation, responsible pet ownership and protecting native wildlife — and encouraging them to participate in activities where killing animals becomes something competitive or entertaining.

If we genuinely want to protect our native wildlife, then educate our children. Teach responsible cat ownership. Promote desexing, microchipping and keeping cats safe. Support rescue organisations. Teach respect for ALL animals.

Children should be learning compassion, empathy and responsible stewardship — not that an animal's life can become a prize, a point or a competition.

I absolutely support protecting New Zealand's native wildlife. But I also believe we can do that without teaching our children that killing cats is acceptable.

Cats deserve better. Our children deserve better. And New Zealand can do better. 🐾🇳🇿
