🐄 Meet the Team Wednesdays 🐄

This week, it’s time to introduce our new grad vet, who’s crossed the ditch from Australia and somehow managed to fit right into the NCVC Dairy team. This young vet hit the ground running, leading with his big smile, big heart and infectious energy. We’ve put together a few questions so you can get to know him a bit better. Scroll on and enjoy 👇

Name: Tom Statham

Hometown:
God's Country, NSW (Cowra)

How long have you worked at NCVC?
Coming up on 8 months, still very fresh off the boat to NZ!

Favourite part of dairy life in Canterbury?
The people and the cows. Great farmers, good systems, and plenty of opportunities to learn, plus the scenery’s not bad either

At what height does a vet officially become “too tall for herringbone parlours”?
Well below my height!

Is it the height, the moustache, or the Aussie accent that farmers clock first?
Definitely the Aussie accent. The height and moustache come later… once they’ve stopped asking why I moved here or whether I genuinely think I’ll ever see the Wallabies win the Bledisloe again...

What’s the biggest thing dairy farming taught you before vet school?
Working on dairies before vet school taught me how to put in a long day of grafting, and to really respect the people on the coalface of the industry. I worked on several farms in Australia and had some tough but great bosses who somehow put up with a very green, young bloke who had no real idea how to dairy at the time. Every one of them taught me something different, gave me a genuine passion for cows and the industry, and showed me that if you’re going to work long hours, get dirty, and be exhausted, you may as well enjoy every minute of it!
