Use it so you don’t lose it!

Older dogs often lose muscle strength, especially in the hindquarters. In the course we will discuss in detail different ways to maintain muscle strength for as long as possible, and even build it up again.

A simple exercise which almost any dog can perform, is to stand with the front paws on a small elevated target no higher than the dog’s wrist. This can be anything, depending on your dog’s size: a bathroom stool, a shelf, a book. As long as it is sturdy and not slippery. Your dog should not be able to slip on this target, and the target itself should not be able to slide along the ground. You can always start at a low level and make it higher later.

Put your target, between you and your dog, and see if he is willing to put his front paw on the target in exchange for a treat. If he finds this a bit stressful, you can first let him get used to the target by putting the treat on it and letting him eat the treat off it. This will usually work just fine. Above all, don’t rush, build up slowly until he no longer finds the target scary. And when he does put his paws on it, the treat is the reward – and praise him for doing well, of course!

Next, let your dog stand with his front paws on the target for a few seconds, and then gently coax him away from it with a treat. Don’t let him make any wild jumps! The weight shift puts the hind legs and back muscles to work.

If your dog can do this easily, you can also move the treat a little to the left and right while he is standing with his paws on the target, which will engage the abdominal muscles as well.

“I’m not really someone who meditates.”

If that thought has ever crossed your mind, my tracks on Insight Timer may still be for you.

You don’t have to sit perfectly still. Your mind doesn’t have to become quiet. And your dog certainly doesn’t have to cooperate by lying peacefully beside you for twenty minutes.

Some of my tracks are meditations. Others are gentle spoken reflections or invitations to slow down, notice your dog and spend a little more conscious time together.

Insight Timer itself is free to use, with a large library of free meditations, talks and music. There is an optional paid subscription with additional content and features, but you don’t need one to listen to my tracks.

So if you’re curious, you can simply explore and see whether there is something there that suits you and your dog.

Car ramp for a young dog? But isn't that for older dogs?

Definitely not! You can't start teaching using a ramp early enough. It should be included in every puppy class. Why? There are two reasons.

First: people often only think about a car ramp once the dog starts having trouble jumping into the car. But from the dog's point of view, that's a problem. He already has trouble jumping, and then you put an obstacle he doesn't know in the way! You often see that the dog refuses to jump at all or tries to jump past the ramp, which usually doesn't go well because jumping into the car was already a problem.

So it is essential to get used to the ramp while there are no problems yet so that you have all the time you need to explain to the dog that the ramp is good news.

Second: injury prevention. In particular, jumping out of the car is quite hard on the forehand, especially if the landing is on hard ground, such as stone or asphalt. If the dog learns from an early age that he only gets out of the car via the ramp, you prevent a lot of strain on the shoulders and elbows. Repetitive microtrauma is often the first onset of osteoarthritis later in life.

My young male Finley often finds this very stupid; he thinks it's a waste of his time when we do fun things 🙄. Too bad for him; I'm thinking of his future even if he doesn't 😉.

Superfoods for health and longevity – part 1

This blog post will delve into the world of edible mushrooms, which certainly deserve the title “superfood” for many reasons. The fantastic news is that every mushroom that is edible for humans can be eaten by our dogs as well.

Mushrooms are classed as fungi, and are neither plant nor animal, they have a kingdom of their own. And they are truly remarkable, containing substances that are not found anywhere else in the world. So, what are their superpowers?

There is a side to living with dogs that doesn’t always fit easily into conversations about health, nutrition, mobility or ageing.

It is the relationship itself.

The quiet companionship. The trust. The way our dogs can comfort and steady us, while depending on us for their own care and wellbeing.

That is one of the reasons I started sharing work on Insight Timer.

It gives me a place to explore the more contemplative side of our relationship with dogs through guided meditations, mindful moments and spoken reflections.
Especially as our dogs grow older, I think there is value in occasionally slowing down and simply being present with them. And sometimes, the human at the other end of the lead needs a little support too.

You can find my meditations and talks on Insight Timer. I’ve also created a new page on my website where you can read a little more about why I’m there and how the platform works.
