I am still in shock, broken and devastated.
As most of you know, Guardian had surgery on his cruciate ligament last November. This healed and recovered incredibly well. Two weeks ago, he started walking a bit strangely with his other hind leg. At first, I thought it might be a bit strained, but last Wednesday he was really walking on only three legs. Due to Ascension Day, I couldn't get an appointment any sooner than today. I thought it would be problems with his cruciate ligament again because I heard it was pretty common that when they have it on 1 knee, it mostly also happens with the other..
Once at the vet, we also discovered a large lump under his ankle on the inside, hard and firmly attached to the bone under the skin. I might have missed this over the past few days due to the chaos of the move, but last week I checked everything myself and I am absolutely certain it wasn't there yet.
They were going to take an X-ray of that, and then of his knee. He was put under anesthesia for this. An X-ray of his knee wasn't even necessary; the lump under his ankle was calcification caused by bone cancer. The bone itself was already being eaten away from the inside and was therefore becoming hollow. A very aggressive form, considering the speed at which this has progressed. I could have chosen to wake him up again, but then he would have cracked through his leg within 2 weeks because there would simply be almost no bone left. And who knows what other places he might have bone cancer in...
So there was really only one option: to have him put to sleep. I went to the vet laughing and feeling happy, and I came back with only a collar ๐
He will be cremated, and I can pick him up within 3 weeks....
This dog has had so much bad luck in his very short life, and never for a second stopped being happy. I am happy and grateful I got to start my new life in Sweden with him by my side to make a lot of beautiful memories to treasure forever ๐
