The question I get asked more than anything else: ‘which training is best for my horse?’

Here’s my honest answer, after advising hundreds of top sport horses over the years: it depends on the problem you’re solving, not on what’s trending.

Swipe through for the 3 I reach for most — and why.

Comment ‘TRAINING’ and I’ll help you figure out which one fits your horse, and how to check it’s actually working.

🐴 “Sport science will not replace great horsemanship. But riders and teams that adopt science and data will replace those that don’t.”
— Chris Sorensen, Elite Show Jumper & Co-founder of EI Potential

And this isn’t only true in elite sport. Whether you compete, ride for fun, or run a riding school — data helps you make the right call. Not instead of your feeling, but on top of it: based on what your horse actually needs.

What are my young horses doing on their day off? Just nothing. Just being a horse.

Most people think a recovery day still means a bit of lunging, a bit of hand-walking — just to keep him moving. For a young horse, it’s not that. It’s turnout. Grass. His herd. As much time outside as possible.

And it’s not only recovery days. Even on training days, young horses need way more time outside than most programs give them. Training is a small slice of the day — the rest should be outside, moving freely, being a horse.

We’re taught that doing something always beats doing nothing. For a young, developing body, doing nothing on purpose is the something.

(The white one? That’s grandma — showing off while still keeping half an eye on the youngsters 😉)

Comment ‘Young horse’ and I’ll tell you how to optimise training with your young horse.

Exhausted? Or well trained?

Honestly — you can’t tell from this clip. Neither could we, just by watching.

Some horses seem trained perfectly all month. Every session felt amazing to ride.

But feeling good and looking good only tell you what happened on the outside. Not what happened inside — how hard his body actually worked, and how well he recovered from it.

That’s exactly what heart rate and recovery analysis shows you. The part feeling and looking good can’t.

Got a heart rate monitor? Measure your horse’s heart rate one minute after your next training session. Drop the number in the comments — I’ll help you figure out what it actually means for your horse.

Horse owners are surrounded by opinions on how to train for strength and fitness. Most of it isn’t backed by anything.

Pole work is a simple example of an exercise grounded in equine muscle physiology — how loading, gait, and repetition actually build strength and stamina, not just guesswork dressed up as expertise.

This is the kind of thing I’ve built my work around: a PhD in equine veterinary medicine, published research in equine exercise physiology, and 16+ years supporting horses at the highest level of sport — including multiple Olympic cycles. Not theory for theory’s sake, but training principles that hold up under real competition demands.

Simple exercises, grounded in real physiology. That’s the whole point.

Did you guess right? 👇

Here’s what the data showed:

Walk: 80–85 bpm
Trot: 130–145 bpm
Canter: 150–171 bpm — depending on speed

That’s moderate to intense work. On what most riders would call a regular training day.

Not a competition. Not an interval workout.

Just a regular training session.

This is exactly what heart rate data reveals — the effort your horse is making, even when it doesn’t look like much from the outside.

Knowing this changes how you plan the next session. How much recovery you build in. Whether you push — or hold back.

Her mare was training hard every day.

But she wasn't getting stronger.

Sophie thought her 6-year-old needed more intensity. More push. More sessions.

The data had a completely different answer.

Those "easy" dressage days — walk, trot, light canter — weren't easy at all.
Her mare's heart rate was pushing into medium-to-high zones on sessions that were supposed to be recovery.

She wasn't under-training her horse.

She was under-recovering her.

Once Sophie could see the data, she adjusted the programme.

Not more training — smarter recovery built in.

Within weeks: a stronger, fitter mare building real fitness towards her first bigger competitions.

This is supercompensation. Most riders never see it coming — because you can't feel it. But you can measure it.

Comment YES if you've ever felt like your horse just wasn't getting stronger, no matter what you tried. 👇

Save this and share it with your trainer.

You trained. It felt hard. Or easy. Or somewhere in between.

But here's the honest truth: feel is a terrible measure of training load. Not because you're wrong — but because feel is filtered through your own energy, your mood, the weather, how your back is doing that day.

Your horse can't tell you. And you can't feel it objectively.

That's exactly what workload data gives you. Not a vibe. Numbers. So you can actually optimise your training, catch overload before it becomes injury, and build performance that holds up when it counts.

What you need to get started: a Polar H10 sensor + the EI Potential app. That's the full list.
