I honestly can’t remember exactly how old Luke was when he learned that “nope” means no swimming. Around 7 or 8 months, I think.
I first posted about it when he was 11 months old. He’s now 20 months and you see, the cue still works.
I use it whenever I need him to stay out of the water: unsafe conditions, an injury risk, a dog nearby who needs space, or simply because the water is gross.
Does it work 9 out of 10 times? Yes.
The one time it doesn’t? That’s usually my timing failing. No force. No fear. No dominance nonsense. Just clear communication, consistency, strong bonding and a very well-paid Aussie.

Today we’re celebrating something rather special: World Animal Day and Ethical Dog Trainers turns 10! 🥳The founding date was chosen intentionally. October 4th 2016. A decade of trust, connection, questionable dog hair and saliva on every outfit, and very happy tails.
Ten years ago it all started with a small dog-walking service. Then came the qualifications: dog trainer, scent-work instructor and reactivity specialist. Before I knew it, helping dogs and their humans understand each other had become the whole point.
Over the past decade, I’ve had the pleasure of working with an extraordinary collection of dogs and their people. From puppies taking their first wobbly steps into the big wide world, to dogs carrying a little extra emotional baggage and discovering that the world doesn’t have to be so scary after all. From shelter-dog volunteers at DOA to private lessons on busy city streets. Every dog, every human and every story has left its mark.
What keeps me going? The dogs. Always the dogs. They deserve training that puts their welfare first: reward-based, compassionate and grounded in current science. Reward-based methods are widely supported as effective and humane, with a strong focus on trust, choice and positive learning.
🙏🏼 This anniversary isn’t mine alone. Thank you to every dog guardian who let their dog join my walks or shared their story and believed in what we could build together. Thank you to colleagues, students, trainees and everyone who believes that dog training should be fair, ethical and occasionally accompanied by a pocket full of cheese.
The next chapter? More of what I love: helping dogs and humans speak each other’s language, with new courses and clinics, fresh ideas and extra support for the dogs who need just a little more help navigating our busy, complex world.
Because learning has a beginning, but no end.

Today, it’s Blue’s birthday! 🎉 He turns 4! 🎂 And this Galgo Español has already won the adoption lottery.
Recently adopted from DOA, Blue hit the jackpot with his mum. She is fully invested, wonderfully committed and determined to make their journey as marvellous as possible. Blue is a Galgo Español: elegant, sensitive, independent and, to put it mildly, a little introverted. He likes his personal space, preferably with a respectful amount of air between himself and the rest of the dog world. Very on-brand for a Spanish sighthound: sprinting may be in his genes, but unnecessary socialising is clearly optional.
When Blue sees another dog, his mum is working hard to help him make better choices. And he is absolutely smashing it.
We are only three weeks in, yet Blue is already actively choosing to ignore other dogs, checking in with his mum and allowing her to guide him away from situations that feel too much. He is also much calmer at home, proof that feeling safe, being fully understood and having a predictable support system can make a huge difference.
I’m genuinely impressed by both of them. Blue is learning that he doesn’t have to deal with the world alone, and his mum is showing him, one thoughtful choice at a time, that the world can be a much less overwhelming place.
Happy birthday, Blue. 🥳

Anyone who’s done our courses knows we’re big fans of playful cues. Luke here has mastered this “catch” cue: when he’s zooming ahead, a quick “catch!” brings him back without a lecture. He loves it, I get him where I need him, and nobody’s bored. It’s a cheerful invitation to return, and earn a treat in the process. Win-win.

Know your sources ‼️
Getting a puppy can feel a bit like stepping into a circus of opinions. 😵‍💫
Suddenly everyone has advice: the breeder, the vet, the internet, your neighbour, and that one reel with dramatic music and zero context.
So I have some advice for you too!! 📣
- Looking for a puppy or dog? Go to a breeder or shelter.
- Need vaccinations or medical help? Go to the vet.
- Want help with training or behaviour? Go to a certified trainer or behavioural consultant.
- Need dietary advice? Go to an animal nutritionist.
The problem starts when everyone starts moonlighting as an expert in everything.
A breeder is not automatically a behaviour professional. A vet is not automatically a trainer. And a trainer should not be your go-to for medical or nutrition advice.
Why does this matter? Because dog advice is not one-size-fits-all, and the wrong guidance can create more confusion than progress.
So yes, ask questions. Just make sure you’re asking the right person. And for professionals; the last picture is for you! 😜

Bij ons kan je pup wekelijks instromen. Zij kunnen namelijk niet wachten om te beginnen met de absolute basics. Je koopt een pakket van 6 lessen die je flexibel kunt gebruikten. Dus kan je een week niet of is je puppy niet lekker, geen probleem. Dan sla je gewoon een weekje over. Het pakket is 3 maanden geldig. We werken in kleine groepjes, ieder op zIjn eigen niveau. Elke zaterdag, om 10.00 in 🇳🇱 en om 11.30 in 🇬🇧 op ons volledig omheinde terrein aan de Riekerweg 6, Amsterdam. You can enrol your puppy with us any week. After all, they can’t wait to get started with the absolute basics. You buy a package of 6 lessons that you can use flexibly. So if you can’t make it one week or your puppy isn’t feeling well, no problem. You can simply skip that week. The package is valid for 3 months. We work in small groups, each at their own level. Every Saturday, at 10.00 in 🇳🇱 and at 11.30 in 🇬🇧 on our fully fenced-in premises at Riekerweg 6, Amsterdam
