🐾 Another wildlife encounter. Another reminder to protect our pets.

Wildlife encounters are a reality for many of us living here, and even a single encounter can leave a dog with serious injuries. 🚑

This sweet pup was brought to Seaside Clínica Veterinaria after being attacked by wildlife. Thankfully, their family knew it was important to have them examined and treated right away. 🩺

Wildlife bites and scratches can cause wounds that are deeper than they appear, become infected, or require additional treatment. There can also be important concerns regarding exposure to diseases such as rabies. 😱

If your pet has an encounter with wildlife:

🐾 Get them safely away from the animal — never put yourself at risk trying to separate them.
🩹 Have them examined by a veterinarian, even if the wounds look small. Puncture wounds can hide significant damage beneath the surface.
💉 Make sure vaccinations are current, especially rabies.
⚠️ If you or anyone else was bitten or scratched while helping, seek medical attention as well.

We share these cases because they are a reminder that wildlife encounters can happen quickly — and knowing what to do afterward can make all the difference.

If your pet is injured, don’t wait and see. We’re here to help. ❤️🐾

🐾 First Vet Visit: BEFORE ➡️ AFTER 🩺💕

From a little nervous and unsure… to realizing that the vet clinic isn’t so scary after all! 🥹

This sweet puppy came in for their first veterinary visit, and we couldn’t resist sharing the transformation. From a complete physical exam and getting comfortable with being handled, to starting their wellness journey, these early visits are so important for setting your puppy up for a lifetime of good health. 🐶✨

And yes… there may have been a few dramatic faces along the way. 😂

Our goal is always to make those first experiences as gentle, positive, and stress-free as possible—because a puppy who learns to trust their veterinary team early is a puppy who will be much happier coming back for years to come. ❤️

Welcome to the Seaside family, little one! 🐾🌊

🐾 When your pet meets wildlife… it can be more than just a close call.

This patient recently came to us after getting into a fight with a wild animal. 😱 Their facial wounds required veterinary treatment and sutures, but injuries from wildlife encounters can be much more serious than they appear on the outside. ❤️‍🩹

Living here in Nicaragua, encounters between pets and wildlife are not uncommon. 🌴 So, how can you help keep your pets safe?

🌿 PREVENTION MATTERS
• Keep dogs supervised, especially at night and in areas where wildlife is active.
• Avoid letting pets roam freely through wooded areas, vacant lots, or near wildlife habitats.
• Keep food, garbage, and pet food secured — these can attract wild animals to your property.
• Use a leash when walking, particularly at dawn, dusk, and nighttime.
• Make sure your yard is secure and check for gaps where wildlife may enter.
• Keep your pet’s vaccinations, especially rabies vaccination, up to date.

🚨 IF YOUR PET IS ATTACKED:
Even if the wounds look small, contact a veterinarian as soon as possible. Bite and claw wounds can hide deep tissue damage and introduce bacteria beneath the skin.

❌ Don’t assume a wound is “just a scratch.”
❌ Don’t wait for swelling, infection, or worsening pain to appear.
❌ Don’t put your hands between animals during a fight — you can be seriously injured too.

If your pet has been in a fight with wildlife, they should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. 🚑 We can assess for hidden injuries, clean and treat wounds, provide appropriate pain relief and medications when needed, and discuss any additional precautions based on the animal involved. 🧑🏽‍⚕️🩺

🐶❤️ A little prevention can go a long way toward keeping our pets — and our local wildlife — safe.

🚨 PYOMETRA: A LIFE-THREATENING EMERGENCY EVERY FEMALE DOG OWNER SHOULD KNOW ABOUT 🚨

Pyometra is a serious, potentially fatal infection of the uterus that most commonly occurs in unspayed female dogs. 🐕 It can happen after a heat cycle, when hormonal changes cause the uterine lining to thicken and create an environment where bacteria can multiply. 🦠

And unfortunately, we see risk factors for pyometra that are particularly important to discuss in our community: ⬇️

💉 Hormonal birth-control injections and pills can significantly increase the risk of uterine disease, including pyometra. These medications are sometimes used to prevent heat cycles or pregnancy, but they are not a safe substitute for sterilization and should never be used. ❌

⚠️ Why is pyometra so dangerous?

The uterus can fill with infected material and puss. If the infection progresses, bacteria and toxins can enter the bloodstream, causing sepsis, kidney damage, shock, organ failure and death. 😱

One of the most dangerous things about pyometra is that the symptoms aren’t always obvious at first. A dog may simply seem a little tired or drink more water.

Some signs to watch for include:

• Increased thirst and urination
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy or weakness
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Swollen or painful abdomen
• Fever
• Vaginal discharge, especially foul-smelling or pus-like discharge

🚨 Important: Some dogs have a closed pyometra, meaning there is no vaginal discharge at all. This can make the condition even harder to recognize while the infection continues to build inside the uterus.

🩺 What is the treatment?

Once a dog has pyometra, this is not something to wait and see.

The standard and most definitive treatment is emergency surgery to remove the infected uterus and ovaries (ovariohysterectomy/spay), along with supportive care such as IV fluids, antibiotics and monitoring when needed.

The sooner treatment begins, the better the chance of survival.

❤️ The best cure is prevention.

Sterilization is the most effective way to prevent pyometra.

And if your dog is currently unspayed, please don’t wait until she becomes sick to talk to your veterinarian.

If your female dog is showing any of the signs above — especially lethargy, vomiting, increased thirst, abdominal swelling or abnormal vaginal discharge — she needs veterinary attention promptly.

Pyometra can become life-threatening very quickly.

Spaying isn’t just about preventing unwanted puppies. It can save her life. ❤️🐾

🦷 When was the last time you checked your pet’s teeth? 🐶🐱

Dental disease is one of the most common health problems we see in pets—and it often goes unnoticed until it becomes painful. 🤐

These photos are a great example of why a professional dental cleaning is about much more than making teeth look clean. 🪥 Heavy tartar can build up along and below the gumline, leading to gingivitis, infection, periodontal disease, loose teeth, and significant pain. 🥴

During a professional dental cleaning, we can:
✨ Remove plaque and tartar buildup
✨ Clean above and below the gumline
✨ Evaluate each tooth for damage or disease
✨ Identify teeth that may need extraction
✨ Polish the teeth to help slow future plaque buildup

And remember: pets are incredibly good at hiding dental pain. Just because they’re still eating doesn’t mean their mouth isn’t hurting. 😷

Regular dental care can help prevent painful disease and protect your pet’s overall health. ❤️🦷

Healthy mouth = happier pet! 👍🏼🐾
