A quiet moment at a baseball game turned into a viral sensation when a golden retriever named Jake — also known as Deuce — calmly trotted across the field carrying a basket of water bottles and stopped beside an umpire. He patiently waited as the man took a drink, returned the bottle, and then rewarded him with the head pat Jake clearly knew he had earned. It was a simple exchange, but one that perfectly captured why fans adored him: calm, focused, and completely at home in the middle of the action.

That sweet clip from a Fort Wayne TinCaps game quickly went viral, showing Jake making his rounds in the infield like a true professional — delivering water to umpires and players, pausing for pats, and moving on with quiet confidence. But that moment was just one small part of a much bigger story.

“Jake the Diamond Dog” wasn’t just one dog — it was a legacy. The name belonged to a line of Golden Retrievers trained by Jeff “Dog Man” Marchal, who spent decades bringing joy to minor league baseball parks across the country. The original Jake began the tradition, followed by successors including Homer, and later Deuce — the dog behind the viral water-delivery moment.

Across ballparks from Albuquerque to Buffalo and many places in between, Jake (in his various forms) became a beloved fixture of the game. He delivered the game ball to pitchers, retrieved bats, helped open games with a bark, and even stood proudly for the national anthem.

Fans adored him most during meet-and-greets, where he happily played, posed, and soaked up every bit of attention like a true celebrity.

His trainer, Jeff Marchal, who had worked with multiple “Diamond Dogs” since the 1990s, often said it had been filled with great memories and great fans along the way. After roughly thirty games a year of bringing smiles to stadiums everywhere, Jake (Deuce) retired in 2018 at the age of twelve. He traded the baseball diamond for a quieter life in Lima, Ohio — but his legacy as baseball’s most charming teammate continues to live on every time that viral clip resurfaces, reminding fans of the joy he brought to the game. ⚾🐶
