5 Early Signs of African Swine Fever on a Pig Farm
One of the dangerous things about African Swine Fever is that you may not immediately realize what you're dealing with.
A pig may become sick, and you may think it's just another disease.
But when several pigs start showing unusual signs around the same time, you need to pay close attention.
Here are 5 things to watch for:
1๏ธโฃ Pigs suddenly stop eating
Several pigs that normally eat well may suddenly lose their appetite and become weak or uninterested in feed.
2๏ธโฃ Sudden high fever
Pigs may become very dull, weak and reluctant to move. They may spend much more time lying down.
3๏ธโฃ Red, dark or purplish skin
You may notice unusual discoloration, particularly around the ears, abdomen, legs or other parts of the body.
4๏ธโฃ Vomiting or diarrhea
Digestive problems can occur, especially when several pigs begin showing these signs around the same time.
5๏ธโฃ Sudden deaths
This is one of the most worrying signs, especially when pigs that appeared healthy suddenly become sick and start dying.
These signs do not prove that the pigs have ASF because other diseases can cause similar problems.
What should concern you is when several of these signs begin appearing in multiple pigs within a short period.
If you suspect ASF, don't move pigs to another farm, don't sell sick pigs and don't bring new pigs into the farm.
Restrict movement, separate affected pigs where practical, and contact a veterinarian or the appropriate animal-health authority for proper investigation and testing.
With ASF, the earlier you recognize that something is wrong, the sooner you can take action to protect the rest of the herd.
