Your line did not go wrong because of one bad decision. It drifted quietly, over many seasons, while you were doing everything you thought was right.
This is the truth nobody tells breeders in Nigeria, Cameroon, Liberia, and across West Africa: the most dangerous problems in a breeding program are never the obvious ones.
They are the ones that move slowly, silently, across generations until the day something surfaces in a litter and you cannot explain where it came from.
That process has a name. It is called genetic drift.
What does genetic drift mean in plain terms?
It means that traits can shift in your line, not because you chose the wrong dog, not because you ignored the standard, but simply because of how reproduction works in a small, closed population.
Every serious kennel is a small, closed population. When only a handful of animals are reproducing across each generation, random variation in which offspring carry which traits accumulates over time.
Desirable traits that your founding dogs expressed reliably can gradually disappear from the line.
Traits you were not selecting for, and would not have chosen, can gradually rise in frequency.
