Nature Spotlight: The Mighty Iroko (Milicia excelsa)

Standing tall across West and Central Africa, the Iroko tree, often called, African Teak, reaches up to 50 meters in height. Renowned for its extreme durability and cultural weight, it remains one of the continent's most revered hardwood species.

Though unrelated to true teak, Iroko wood shares its premium qualities. It is exceptionally dense and naturally immune to moisture, termites, and fungal rot. Freshly cut wood sports a bright golden-yellow hue that gradually matures into a rich, dark bronze-brown. Its stability makes it a top choice for boat-building, outdoor furniture, heavy construction, and luxury cabinetry.

Beyond its practical uses, the Iroko carries immense spiritual weight in West African heritage, particularly within Yoruba and Igbo traditions. Historically believed to house powerful spirits, felling an Iroko required traditional prayers and offerings to appease the tree's guardians. Thanks to their massive size and longevity, ancient Irokos frequently served as gathering places and boundary markers for communities.

Wild Iroko populations are currently classified as Near Threatened, due to heavy logging and habitat loss.

Cultivating the tree in managed plantations remains difficult, as young saplings are highly vulnerable to the destructive Iroko gall bug (Phytolyma lata). Conservation efforts continue to focus on sustainable harvesting and pest-resistant propagation.
