Seborrhea in Dogs

Seborrhea is a disorder of keratinization in which the skin produces abnormal amounts of scales and/or sebum (oil). It commonly causes flaky skin, excessive oiliness, crusting, odor and sometimes itching.

🔍 Understanding the image

A. Flaky skin
The visible white/yellow flakes represent excessive scaling and abnormal shedding of skin cells. The scales may be dry (seborrhea sicca) or greasy/oily (seborrhea oleosa).

B. Hair follicle
The hair grows from the hair follicle. Seborrheic disorders can affect the follicular environment and contribute to poor coat quality, follicular plugging and secondary infections.

C. Sebaceous gland
Sebaceous glands are associated with hair follicles and produce sebum, an oily substance that lubricates and protects the skin and hair. Abnormal sebum production can contribute to greasy skin and a characteristic odor.

🩺 Types

1. Primary seborrhea

* Usually an inherited keratinization disorder.
* More common in certain breeds.
* Often begins at a relatively young age.
* Requires long-term management.

2. Secondary seborrhea
This is much more common and develops because of an underlying problem, such as:

* 🦠 Bacterial or Malassezia yeast infection
* 🪳 Fleas and mites
* 🌿 Allergic dermatitis
* 🦋 Endocrine diseases such as hypothyroidism
* Cushing’s syndrome
* Nutritional disorders
* Other chronic skin diseases

⚠️ Common clinical signs

* Excessive dandruff/scaling
* Greasy or oily coat
* Red or inflamed skin
* Crusting
* Bad skin odor
* Itching, especially when secondary infection is present
* Hair loss or poor coat quality
* Recurrent ear infections

🔬 Diagnosis

Seborrhea itself is often a clinical finding rather than a final diagnosis. A veterinarian may perform:

* Skin examination
* Skin scraping
* Cytology for bacteria and Malassezia
* Fungal testing when indicated
* Flea/parasite evaluation
* Blood tests and endocrine testing when systemic disease is suspected

Drinking from puddles can be deadly for dogs due to leptospirosis lurking in the water. 🦠
It’s a fact that not many pet parents are aware of but you can protect your pooch.

No matter if you live in the city, a suburb, or rural area, lepto can be found in standing water and can even contaminate soil. It only takes a sip here, and a splash there for your dog to catch this dangerous, fast-moving bacterial infection.
