Cheeko update 🧡

He’s doing better… not fully stabilised yet, but we’re getting there.

Still adjusting his meds, but good news is his vet visits are now every 2 months instead of monthly. That’s already a small win.

Also… he’s much calmer at the vet now 🥹
Even enjoyed the treats there (so of course we got some for him plus they have vitamins that help with his immunity since he’s FIV+).

He’s continuing his meds, started on supplements, and is now updated with his Revolution too.

Super thankful that his Atopica is fully sponsored now. Really takes a huge weight off.

We do have a remaining RM127 vet bill to settle and wondering if you can help. If yes, you can scan the QR in this post 🙏 Any amount will go a long way.

We’re still looking for a foster (and hopefully adopter) for Cheeko.

Fundraising & Closure for Pappa

Pappa is no longer with us. 🤍

But this is the part people don’t always see : the reality that comes after we try to save a life.

When Pappa was admitted to Kota Damansara Vet on Sat, he was already in a very critical state. Tests had to be done quickly so the vets can determine the right course of treatment, and from there, intensive meds were started to try and stabilise him.

Few days ago, when his fosterer reached out to me, she was desperate and overwhelmed. At that point, Pappa still showed signs that he might pull through. That was why I chose to step in.

We all thought there was still a chance.

The shelter he came from wasn’t ready to let him go either, but they simply did not have the means to support what was needed.

From Sat to Sun, his condition deteriorated very quickly. The vets had already started preparing us for the worst. 😞

When we managed to get a blood donor and Pappa was still responding, we decided on one final push. From experience, by the third day, we usually know which direction things are going.

Some of you may remember that not long ago, I said I would stop taking in new rescue cases.
And I meant it.

The emotional, physical and financial toll of rescue work can be very HEAVY, and I had reached a point where I knew I needed to slow down and focus on something more sustainable, hence AKC is my focus now.

But sometimes… a situation appears that you simply cannot walk away from.

This is Pappa.

Pappa was taken out from a shelter in Johor at the end of Feb and arrived at his foster home in JB on 5 March. For the past few days, he was finally experiencing something he probably hadn’t had in a long time... a safe home environment.

The photos you see here were taken during those days.
He looked calm.
He looked comfortable.
He looked like he was finally getting a chance.

Late last night, his fosterer (who is also my neighbour) reached out to me feeling overwhelmed and unsure what else she could do. She was trying her best for him but felt very alone facing such a serious situation at the hospital.

After speaking with her and getting more information from the vet today, I made the decision to step in & help take over Pappa’s case. We had him transferred to KD Vet this afternoon for it’s nearer to us & I have worked with this vet team in the past. Familiarity & trust with the vet team is very important to me. Very grateful that the team was willing to take Pappa in today.

Even though I had already told myself I wouldn’t take on more rescues.
Because sometimes rescue isn’t about plans or boundaries. Sometimes it’s about not turning away when a life is hanging by a thread, and not leaving someone to face that fight alone.

I know this will likely become a very costly medical case, and I am prepared to carry that responsibility. But if anyone wishes to help support Papa’s treatment, any contribution would certainly help lighten the load.

Most importantly right now, we just hope Papa can hold on and get through this night.

Please keep him in your thoughts. And I pray we can get support from everyone reading this... I will raise funds later but incase you’re curious, we’ve been quoted RM5000 for his life saving treatments first. 😢

Since my last update in mid-January, Cheeko has returned to see .

Aside from being FIV+, Cheeko has also been diagnosed with Feline Atopic Skin Sensitivity. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for this condition. From what we understand so far, his trigger is likely environmental or stress related, rather than food, but the exact trigger is still unknown.

Last year, Cheeko responded very well to Cyclosporine after a vet visit. However, after the medication finished, there was no follow-up appointment. A few months later, his symptoms returned and his skin became inflamed again.

Around the same time, the family’s younger child (still a baby) also developed chronic skin allergies. In fact, almost everyone in the household (except the husband) has some form of skin allergy.

For a young family living in a small apartment in a busy urban setting, this became understandably stressful.

We discussed several options. I reached out to people I know who might be able to foster or adopt Cheeko. I even explored pet hotels, but finding an affordable and suitable space for an FIV+ cat at short notice proved extremely difficult.

This was also during the CNY period, followed closely by Puasa and Raya season when it’s a time when many people already have travel plans or family commitments.

Through all this, my priority remained the same:
Cheeko needed treatment first. ❤️‍🔥

When I saw him again, his fur was patchy and his skin badly inflamed. He was clearly uncomfortable.

Cheeko is now back on Cyclosporine, and thankfully his condition has improved significantly after his recent follow-up visit.

The medication, however, is expensive.
One month of Cyclosporine can easily cost the equivalent of a small family’s grocery bill.

Despite everything, Cheeko’s family has agreed to continue caring for him for now, until we can find a stable forever home that is able to manage his condition long-term.

Noticed this boy staying by the side of a busy road since yesterday afternoon.

Location: Palm Spring @ Damansara (next to Kota Damansara)

A passerby who walks this route daily confirmed he had been there since around 12pm, too scared to leave.

At first, there were no bowls or mat.
Later, he noticed food bowls and a soft padding placed on the ground (maybe someone trying to help), but he still didn’t move from the spot.

I managed to get him into my car today. 😰

I want to be honest 😭 I’m not in the capacity to take in another rescue case right now, but I couldn’t turn away and leave him there. I’ll be bringing him to the vet for a health check once they open tomorrow.

If you recognise him, please come forward. He’s clearly homesick and terrified.

I’m really hoping someone can help take over his case after the vet visit 😭 whether to help locate his owner or assist with rehoming if needed.

I can help with fundraising, but I won’t be able to manage this case on the ground long-term.

Today we lost another beautiful soul.

Ebby @ Ebony @ Nini left on her own terms, even though we fought hard for more time with her.

She was found in DP a few years back, skinny and dirty, with one eye blinded and dental issues, something sadly common among stray cats due to neglect and poor food quality.

But she was a gentle, loving soul. Strong on the inside, soft on the outside, and never carried any anger.

She flourished under her pawrents’ love, and she loved her sister, Princess. She filled the void in the household perfectly.

Over time, she grew into a beautiful, loving little soul.

For slightly over four years, she lived like a princess herself 🩷 surrounded by love, spoiled silly with everything she demanded, and completely wrapped around her daddy’s heart (especially since he never thought he wanted another cat).

We are all heartbroken. We wanted more time with her. But God loves her more.

She’s pain-free now, and that means a lot. She left knowing love, safety, and acceptance ❤️‍🩹 and nothing can replace the value of that in her life.

It took me a long time to find the words to write about Cheeko. (do u remember his story?)

He was found abandoned in my condo bout 2 years ago. We planned to TNR him thinking no one would want him. But we tried anyway cos he was so affectionate, I posted his story, and a family came forward to adopt him.

They loved him.
Cheeko was happy in their home, bonded with their toddler and their cat, T.
Even after he tested positive for FIV (much to our surprise 😣) and developed recurring skin issues, they continued caring for him.

Until recently.

They had a 2nd child, and suddenly both children developed skin problems, and the kids doctor advised removing the cats from the home. T is returning to the grandparents. They called me, wanting Cheeko to be rehomed. I found myself having to start all over again. 😓

Cheeko is FIV+.
He has ongoing skin issues. (Something I intend to dig deeper into for his sake)

And he is emotionally bonded to his humans. He is only calm at the vet when his owner is with him. Without them, he is anxious, stressed, and afraid. This is gonna be the hardest part for us… 🤍

Other than that, he’s a loving cat. And he loves to play with T, even tho T sometimes find him annoying.

I feel like I’m drowning.

I want to focus on our NGO’s core mission (TNVRM work in PJ) but now I have to take in another rescue work without capacity or readiness.

I need help.
Cheeko needs help.

And right now… I don’t know where to find it.

P/S: I have talked to a few friends… but I guess I’m trying to find a solution that’s more manageable & sustainable for Cheeko and myself. And I haven’t found it yet…
