Meet T**i. 🐈💛

At just 4 months old, T**i was diagnosed with arthritis in his hip joint. His gait was noticeably lopsided as his body tried to compensate for the discomfort.

Instead of only focusing on the painful hip, we looked at how his entire body was adapting. Through regular Canine & Feline Myofunctional Therapy, we worked on releasing tight muscles, improving mobility, encouraging balanced movement patterns, and supporting the muscles that help stabilise the joint.

If you've met T**i, you'll know one thing... he has plenty to say! 🎶 Every therapy session came with a soundtrack of enthusiastic meows, making him one of our most vocal little patients.

Fast forward 9 months, and the difference speaks for itself. While arthritis cannot be reversed, the way the body moves can be improved. T**i now walks with an almost normal gait, showing just how much comfort, function, and quality of life can be gained with consistent therapy.

At 19 years young, John proves that age is just a number. ❤️ This handsome senior Poodle arrived for his Canine Myofunctional Therapy session proudly wearing his Spain football bib—and he definitely looked match ready!

As our senior dogs age, their muscles naturally weaken, joints become stiffer, and movement can become more challenging. Canine Myofunctional Therapy helps by improving circulation, maintaining muscle function, supporting joint mobility, and keeping our golden oldies as comfortable and active as possible.

John may be slowing down, but his spirit is still championship material. 🏆 Every therapy session is about helping him enjoy his golden years with greater comfort, confidence, and quality of life.

Meet Josh 🐾❤️ — a handsome senior Miniature Pinscher living with luxating patella.

When the knees become unstable or painful, dogs naturally shift more of their weight onto their front limbs to compensate. Over time, this places extra strain on the shoulders, clavicle region, chest muscles, and surrounding fascia.

🐾 PART 2: Soft Sand vs Firm Sand – What Changed?

Here's the same dog's hind paw print, but this time on the firmer, wetter part of the beach.

Notice the difference?

On the firm sand:
✅ The paw sinks less
✅ The toes are less spread
✅ The print is more defined
✅ Less energy is needed to push forward

Compare this to the soft sand print from Part 1, where the paw had to work harder to stabilize and generate propulsion.

What does this mean for your dog?

🏖️ Soft sand:
• Greater muscle activation
• More work for the glutes, hamstrings, calves, and paw stabilizers
• Better for strength and conditioning
• More physically demanding

🌊 Firm wet sand:
• More efficient movement
• Less muscular effort required
• Easier on the body for longer walks
• Better choice for dogs building fitness or returning from injury

Think of it like the difference between walking on a soft mattress versus a paved footpath. Both are useful, but they challenge the body in very different ways.

⚠️ Dogs with hip dysplasia, luxating patella, cruciate injuries, significant arthritis, or other orthopedic conditions should avoid running on deep soft sand unless specifically advised by their veterinarian or rehabilitation professional.

The beach isn't just one surface—where your dog walks can dramatically change the workout... further up the shoreline are grassy patches, firm ground, another good area for dogs with compromised mobility to walk on too.

Early morning walkies this weekend with my girls. If you look at the beach, there is an obvious line of firm vs soft sand. I am still cautious with uneven surfaces for senior dog, WhiteSocks who had her TPLO surgery 2 years ago, so she walks on the firm part. I am aware that the chances of the other cruciate ligament snapping is higher for dogs who have had a same issue on the other knee. So best to err on the side of caution.

Milo, the younger one, gets a free rein on where she wants to go.

🐾 What can Milo's paw print in soft sand tell us?

More than you might think!

When a dog walks on soft sand, the paw sinks and the ground shifts beneath it. To stay balanced and move forward, the hind limb muscles have to work much harder than they do on firm ground.

💪 Muscles working overtime:
• Gluteals – power the push forward
• Hamstrings – help propel the body
• Quadriceps – support and stabilize the knee
• Calf muscles – provide the final push-off
• Paw and toe muscles – grip and stabilize on the uneven surface

Soft sand doesn't necessarily stretch these muscles more—it challenges them to work harder. That's why beach walks can be an excellent strength and conditioning exercise for healthy dogs.

⚠️ Not every dog is a good candidate for soft sand exercise.

Dogs with conditions such as:
• Luxating patella
• Hip dysplasia
• Cruciate ligament injuries
• Iliopsoas strains
• Significant arthritis

may experience increased stress on already compromised joints and supporting muscles. Deep sand running can worsen discomfort and fatigue, especially if introduced too quickly.

✅ Start slowly, keep sessions short, and always match the exercise to the individual dog's fitness level and orthopedic health.

A beach walk may look easy, but for your dog it's often a full-body workout! 🏖️🐕

T**i is doing well, he is taken to cat walking along his condo's corridor and being very well behaved at that too. Diagnosed with early onset of arthritis on one of his hips at 9 months, T**i's mum has started multiple therapies , with CMT being one of them.

He does look forward to his sessions now as he knows he feels alot better after that.

We are very glad to be able to contribute to his healthspan.

Full on CMT party when the brothers come for their maintenance CMT.... regular maintenance sessions have been effective in managing patella (knee) stresses for the 2 older boys... Mylo is starting early for regular maintenance which I always love to see pawrents doing that as we get to nip tensions and knots before they affect gait and conformation!
