What is Maggot Wound and How to Treat?

Maggot wound (Myiasis) happens when fly larvae(maggots) infest a wound, infected skin, or soiled fur on a cat or dog.
It is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY because maggots can rapidly damage tissue and cause severe infection.

Common Signs;
- Visible maggots in or around a wound
- Foul smelling discharge
- Red, swollen, or bleeding skin
- Pain when touched
- Loss appetite
- Fever
- Excessive licking or scratching

How it can Occur?
- Open wounds or injuries
- Skin infection
- Dirty fur or skin
- Weak or sick pets
- Late to get treatment

Veterinary Treatment;
- Remove all maggots
- Clean and debride dead tissue
- Treat pain and inflammation
- Prescribe medications
- Sometimes sedate or anesthetize the pet for thorough treatment.

Prevention;
- Keep wounds clean and covered (if needed)
- Maintain good hygiene
- Control flies surrounding areas
- Treat any fresh wound as soon as possible
- Go to the veterinary clinic for check up

Terdapat beberapa jenis “kutu” yang biasa dijumpai. Ada yang hidup di kulit, ada yang menghisap darah, dan juga yang menyebabkan masalah telinga atau kurap.

Berikut jenis yang paling biasa:

1. Kutu Pinjal (Flea)
Paling common pada kucing dan anjing.

Ciri-ciri:
- Kecil, warna coklat gelap/hitam
- Melompat laju
- Selalu berada di belakang badan, leher, pangkal ekor

Tanda haiwan dijangkiti:
- Garu badan berlebihan
- Kulit merah atau luka
- Bulu gugur
- Ada “flea dirt” (serbuk hitam macam lada)

Contoh spesis:
i) Ctenocephalides felis (kutu kucing)
ii) Ctenocephalides canis (kutu anjing)

2. Kutu Sengkenit (Tick)
Kutu yang melekat dan hisap darah.

Ciri-ciri:
- Bentuk bulat/leper
- Akan membesar bila penuh darah
- Selalu melekat pada telinga, leher, celah jari

Bahaya:
- Boleh sebabkan anemia
- Bawa penyakit darah
- Demam dan lemah

Contoh spesis:
i) Brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus)

3. Hama/Kutu Telinga (Ear Mites)
Selalu berlaku pada anak kucing.

Ciri-ciri:
- Sangat kecil, tak nampak jelas dengan mata
- Hidup dalam telinga

Tanda:
- Telinga sangat gatal
- Kotoran hitam macam serbuk kopi
- Kepala selalu digeleng

Contoh spesis:
i) Otodectes cynotis

4. Hama Kurap / Mange Mites
Boleh sebabkan kulit botak dan gatal teruk.

Contoh spesis:
Pada anjing:
i) Sarcoptes scabiei → sangat gatal
ii) Demodex canis → kulit botak

Pada kucing:
i) Notoedres cati

Tanda:
- Kulit berkuping
- Bulu gugur
- Kulit tebal dan merah

5. Kutu Bulu (Lice)
Kurang biasa tetapi masih boleh berlaku.

Ciri:
- Melekat pada bulu
- Tidak melompat seperti flea

Tanda:
- Bulu kusam
- Gatal
- Banyak pada haiwan kurang sihat

Cara Pencegahan
i) Gunakan ubat anti-kutu berkala
ii) Bersihkan tempat tidur haiwan
iii) Vakum rumah jika ada flea
iv) Rawat semua haiwan dalam rumah sekali

iii) Revolution
iv) Frontline Plus
