KITTEN DUMPED IN THE TRASH: UPDATE! 🩷

You may remember the tiny kitten we found dumped in the trash behind Tun Jugah Mall a few weeks ago.

This poor baby had been discarded in a cardboard box, absolutely covered in fleas, suffering from badly infected eyes and so malnourished that, despite being around five weeks old, she weighed just 202g.

Fast forward three weeks and look at her now! 🥹

She’s flea free, worm free, her eyes are bright and clean, and most importantly, she now weighs almost 500g!

Getting her here has taken weeks of hard work from one of our wonderful volunteers, round-the-clock care and multiple vet visits, but it has all been worth it.

This gorgeous little girl is now called Lucy, and she is growing quickly, full of energy and absolutely loves to play. The tiny, sick kitten who was thrown away like rubbish is now a happy, healthy little bundle of chaos and joy. 🩷

Lucy is just one of many cats and kittens receiving this level of care from us right now. Every day brings medications, feeding, cleaning, vet trips, new rescues and countless hours of work, but seeing cats who arrived suffering become happy and healthy makes every bit of it worthwhile.

And the work doesn’t stop. Today we welcomed three cats back to the shelter after treatment at the vet, and this weekend we already have another four cats and kittens due to join us, including a paralysed cat, a cat with wobbly cat syndrome and two kittens.

None of this happens without the people who support us.

To everyone who donates, attends our events, shares our posts, volunteers their time or simply follows along and cheers these cats on, thank you. You are part of every transformation like Lucy’s, and we genuinely couldn’t keep doing this without you. 🩷

🎨🐾 PORTRAITS & PAWS: Paint Your Rescue! 🐾🎨

What happens when you combine rescue cats, paint, creativity and an afternoon at Pawsitive Vibes? Probably a few questionable masterpieces… and a lot of fun. 😂🩷

This weekend we’re hosting Portraits & Paws, a completely relaxed, no-experience-needed art workshop inspired by the cats who call our shelter home.

📸 We’ll start by heading into the shelter, where you can meet the cats, choose your favourite and take a photo of your chosen model.

🎨 Then we’ll head into our workshop, where it’s time to turn that photo into your very own piece of art.

Paint them realistically. Turn them into a cartoon. Make them look like royalty. Give them sunglasses, a crown, a spaceship… there are absolutely no rules. Your masterpiece can be as beautiful, ridiculous or creative as you like.

And don’t worry if you haven’t picked up a paintbrush since school. No artistic experience is needed and all materials are provided.

When you’re finished, you take your original artwork home, but not before taking a photo with your creation and the cat who inspired it! Plus we’ll make a copy to add to our growing Pawsitive Vibes workshop gallery, creating a collection of portraits celebrating the rescue cats who inspired them. 🩷

What actually is an animal rescue NGO?

It’s exactly what the name says, a Non-Governmental Organisation.

Sometimes when people see “NGO” they seem to imagine a huge organisation working behind the scenes, with funding, staff, resources and the ability to immediately make drastic changes.

The reality is often very different.

Most animal rescue NGOs are small groups of people who came together because they wanted to make a difference. They give their own time, often their own money, and somehow have to find ways to raise funds while simultaneously rescuing animals, running shelters and trying to create longer-term change.

You start small, you rescue animals, you find somewhere to put them; maybe eventually you build a shelter. You improve your fundraising, increase the number of animals you can help, start TVNR programmes, work on education, speak with government and look for ways to grow.

None of that happens overnight, and being an NGO doesn’t mean the government suddenly gives you money to do it. In most cases, we’re largely left to figure it out ourselves.

Recently we’ve seen quite a lot of criticism directed towards local animal NGOs for apparently not doing enough, oftentimes an individual taking every opportunity to leave negative comments on every rescue post, every post about education, or other efforts that local groups are making. And we understand some of the frustration behind it. Sarawak has a huge stray animal problem and people want somebody to fix it. So do we.

But there isn’t one magical solution. Rescue matters, but so does TVNR. So does education in schools, responsible ownership, public involvement, fundraising, government cooperation and changing the way our communities think about animals. All of these things need to happen together and all of them take time.

What is frustrating is seeing people direct their anger towards the small groups who are already trying, particularly when some of the loudest criticism comes from people who contribute very little themselves. It’s easy to look at an NGO and say, “Why aren’t they doing more?” It’s much harder to actually do more.

There are people across Sarawak giving up their time every day to rescue animals, run shelters, organise sterilisation, raise money, find adopters and try to build something that might eventually make a genuine difference. None of us are perfect and none of us can solve this crisis alone, but bit by bit we’re trying.

If you think more needs to be done, we agree with you. Volunteer. Foster. Donate. Help with TVNR. Rescue an animal. Fundraise. Educate people. Support the organisations already doing the work.

And if you genuinely believe you can do it better, then form a group, register an NGO and demonstrate how you think things should be done. We’d genuinely welcome another organisation out there in Sarawak making a difference.

Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Because criticising the people already trying won’t solve Sarawak’s stray animal crisis. More people trying will.

We need to talk about pet cat surrenders.

In just the past few days, we’ve had many different people contact us asking us to take multiple pet cats into our shelter.

We understand that circumstances change. People move, relationships break down, financial situations change. Sometimes things happen that genuinely cannot be predicted.

But surrendering a pet cat to a shelter should be an absolute last resort, not the first solution when keeping them becomes difficult.

Our space is extremely limited, and every space we have has to be prioritised for cats with nowhere else to go; injured cats on the street, abandoned kittens, sick cats, pregnant mothers and animals in immediate danger. A pet cat currently living safely in a home is not in the same situation.

And there’s another side to this that people sometimes don’t consider. For a cat rescued from terrible conditions on the street, coming into our shelter can be an enormous improvement in their life. They suddenly have food, safety, medical care and people looking after them.

But for a cat that has spent years living in a home A shelter can actually be a huge step backwards.

Suddenly they are sharing their environment with dozens of unfamiliar cats. Their person is gone, their home is gone, their routine is gone. Everything familiar to them has disappeared overnight. Some adapt quickly, others really struggle. That is why, whenever possible, direct rehoming is far better.

If you know that you may no longer be able to keep your cat, start looking for a new home as early as possible. Speak to friends and family. Post in adoption groups. Take good photographs. Write about their personality. Ask rescues to help SHARE your adoption post rather than immediately asking them to take the cat.

Most importantly, give yourself time.

Several recent requests we’ve received have come with deadlines of just a day or two: “I need them gone tomorrow.” Unless something completely unexpected has happened, rehoming a pet should not begin 48 hours before they need to leave.

We also have to be realistic about cost. Every additional cat entering our shelter means food, litter, parasite treatment, vaccinations, testing, sterilisation where necessary, medical care and potentially years of ongoing responsibility.

In the past, we have accepted surrendered pets after being promised that their owners would continue contributing towards their expenses. Those promises have not always lasted, the cat, however, remains.

We aren’t saying any of this to attack people who genuinely have no other option. Sometimes surrender really is unavoidable, and we will always have sympathy for those situations. But a rescue shelter should be the safety net at the very end of the process, not the starting point.

If your cat is safe with you today, please use that time to find them another safe home tomorrow. Because every shelter space given to a pet who had other options can mean one less space for a street cat who has none.

Two new arrivals today.

The first, found and brought to us by Wendy, a kind member of the public who discovered this poor cat suffering in silence. Wendy not only collected the cat and dropped to the vet, but also kindly paid the vet bills and made sure there was enough to cover the treatment. This cat has tested negative for parvo and is now undergoing treatment for flu and scabies.

The second cat was reported to us via Facebook post today, spotted by a lady who was very concerned for the cat’s wellbeing. Thankfully rescuer Jlynn was able to head over there and collect the cat this afternoon. This one is also negative for parvovirus, but has some nasty wounds which require treating.

Both cats will stay with the vet tonight; and we will collect them tomorrow, after which they will be placed into quarantine before joining our happy cat house.

Rescues are coming in thick and fast right now. We will keep doing what we can to help as many cats as possible. If you wish to help us continue this work, our QR is attached. And a huge thank you as always to everyone who continues to support us. YOU are the reason we can keep on doing this. 🩷

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us for our very first Meow Chef workshop today! 🐱👩‍🍳🩷

We had such a great afternoon sharing exactly how we make our homemade cat food; from the ingredients we use and where we source them, to how we make sure our cats are getting the nutritional balance they need.

Then it was time to get stuck in! Everyone helped prepare a huge fresh batch of food, while more than 100 very impatient taste-testers waited next door… 😂

And, of course, we saved the best part until last.

We took everything we had made straight into the shelter and fed it to the cats. We think they approved! 😹🩷

Workshops like Meow Chef are about more than just having a fun afternoon. They give people a chance to come inside, learn more about what we do, meet our cats and become part of our little rescue community, while also helping us raise the funds we need to continue our rescue work.

So once again, a HUGE thank you to everyone who came along today and made our first Meow Chef such a success. 🩷🐾

And we get to do it all again tomorrow!

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. 100/100. 🩷

We did it.

When we launched Mission:100, we asked our community to help us fund 100 vaccines for the cats in our care. And you showed up!

All 100 vaccines are now fully funded.

That’s a huge sum of money towards something that isn’t always the most exciting part of rescue. It isn’t an emergency operation, it isn’t a dramatic before-and-after story; it’s prevention.

It’s protecting a kitten before they become sick. It’s keeping our young cats properly vaccinated as they grow. It’s making sure our long-term residents don’t lose the protection they already have. And in a shelter caring for more than 100 cats, that matters enormously.

Even better, well over half of these vaccines have already been administered. We’ve been quietly working our way through a huge vaccination programme while Mission:100 has been running, and over the next few days we’ll show you exactly what your support has made possible. 🩷

To every person who funded one vaccine, five vaccines, ten vaccines: thank you!

To everyone who shared the campaign, commented, encouraged us or helped it reach somebody new: thank you.

You didn’t just help us hit a fundraising target. You helped us protect our cats. And because new cats continue to arrive, if any additional Mission:100 donations came in after we reached our target but before we could close the campaign, every extra ringgit will go directly towards vaccinating incoming rescues.

100 vaccines funded. A safer shelter. A healthier future for the cats who depend on us.

Some cats become part of a rescue. Others become part of its foundations. Kardashian is one of ours. 🩷

Kardashian was one of our earliest rescues. Everything Pawsitive Vibes has become was built with a few very special cats beside us; Kardashian, Mrs Meow, Dory. They aren’t simply cats in our care. They are part of the story of this place. Part of our story. They are family.

And right now, our Kardashian is very unwell.

She had a whole life before us. We later learned she once lived at a local hotel before disappearing years ago. We know she had kittens. When she eventually found her way to us, she was already very unwell.

But from the moment Kardashian became ours, she never for one moment stopped being a member of our family. One that we cherish dearly.

She has been here through everything alongside us.

As our little rescue grew. As we learned. As we made mistakes and became better. As hundreds of cats came through our doors. As Pawsitive Vibes became something far bigger than we ever imagined. Kardashian was there.

Recently she began losing weight. And test after test, we finally discovered she has FIV; something she would have carried silently for years. Right now she has a very low red blood cell count, a secondary infection and other complications.

But there is hope! She’s eating well. She’s alert. She’s staying in our room so we can keep her close, and she’s still jumping onto our bed by herself. We’re giving her fluids regularly, treating everything we can, and already seeing signs of improvement.

We don’t know what happens next, but Kardashian has fought before, and we’re fighting with her now. We will do absolutely everything we can for this girl.

Today, we’re not asking for anything except your thoughts. If you pray, please pray for Kardashian. If you don’t, send our girl some love and hope alongside us that she keeps getting stronger.

Because Pawsitive Vibes without Kardashian is something we simply aren’t ready to imagine. Not even close.

Please join us as we send every ounce of love we can towards our beloved, gorgeous girl.

THIS is what one week of cat rescue looks like. 🩷

It’s easy to lose sight of just how much happens here in seven days. So this week, we stopped and counted.

And we’re pretty proud of what our little team has achieved.

🐾 100+ cats cared for every single day
🏡 7 new cats brought into our care
💉 56 cats vaccinated
🏥 8 vet visits made
❤️ 4 cats brought home after treatment at the vet
💊 8 cats with FIP given their continuing medication
🐱 13 kittens gaining weight, growing stronger and improving in health

And those are just the things we can easily count.

They don’t include the bowls of food prepared, litter trays cleaned, medications given, laundry washed, floors scrubbed, cats monitored, messages answered, records updated, vet discussions, emergency decisions, cuddles given, or the countless little jobs that keep more than 100 cats safe, comfortable and cared for.

That was one week.

Seven days of turning support into something real.

Into vaccinations. Treatment. Full bellies. Recoveries. Growing kittens. Cats coming home from the vet. And safe places for seven more cats who needed us.

There will always be more to do, but sometimes it’s important to stop for a moment and celebrate what has been done.

We’re incredibly proud of our team, our volunteers, and everyone in our community who makes weeks like this possible.

This is Pawsitive Vibes. This is what we do. 🩷
