We love the underwater world of an aquarium, especially in the nature aquarium, as how it’s named , it’s an underwater world with a living eco-system that is designed or decorated to replicate a scene or a scape that you’ve seen in the nature, be it submerged or emerged or hybrid. Completed with soothing, live aquatic plants, driftwood, rocks, and of course livestock (fishes, shrimps, snails..etc) , the nature aquarium is both serene and attractive. Now, one can enjoy the beauty of nature, contained in an aquarium. It’s been a hobby and passion of mine that fulfill my mind during free time, sitting in front of the nature aquarium with a cup of coffee or tea is just another level of mind meditation/therapy for me. We run high CO2 levels in many of our aquariums, and a common question is how to avoid gassing fish. The key is good gas exchange: keep the water surface clean and ensure surface water circulates with the deeper layers. You can achieve this by placing outflows near the surface and using surface skimmers to keep the surface clear.

The mechanics of CO2 injection can feel counterintuitive to beginners. Many think that minimizing surface agitation will maximize CO2 in the water, but this can cause CO2 to build up too quickly. High CO2 saturation in the water column needs to be paired with strong off-gassing so the system stabilizes at a high equilibrium point. Good gas exchange is the key to avoiding gassing fish.

Being able to manage algae is one of the key skill sets of planted aquarium upkeep. Even planted aquariums that are badly affected by algae can be restored if the right techniques are applied. Update on the 120x60x50cm tank:
White plants growing in slowly, while Rotala florida is still recovering from fish damage, so the colors are not fully out yet.
Syngonanthus are also slower to gain height compared to Rotala/Ludwigias, so it will take probably another month or so for the stem plants to grow fully into the scape.
