They feel so much better when you listen. ❤️
But don’t rush it.‼️
Even when I communicate with animals who have behavioural “issues,” sometimes it takes time for me to get to the answer too. Sometimes it’s hours. Sometimes days. 🥹
So if your animal is showing you a behaviour you don’t understand, here’s something you can try:
1. Notice the behaviour.
Before immediately reacting, pause and ask yourself: What happened before this?
What were they doing? What were you doing? Was there a change in their environment, routine, or surroundings?
2. Notice what’s happening in you.
Their “misbehaviour” might make you angry, frustrated or overwhelmed. That’s okay.
Take a moment to breathe. Notice where that feeling sits in your body. Is it in your chest? Your stomach? Your jaw?
You don’t have to get rid of the feeling. Just notice it, breathe, and give yourself a moment before responding.
3. Come back to them when you’re calm.
You can even say:
“I’m sorry I reacted that way. I know you’re trying to tell me something. I’m listening.”
You don’t have to know the answer immediately. Just let them know you’re willing to listen.
4. Pay attention.
Now watch.
What happens next? Do they lead you somewhere? Repeat the behaviour? Look at something? Bring you something? Change their behaviour when you change yours?
Sometimes the answer isn’t going to come as a big, obvious “message.” Sometimes it’s very subtle.
So make sure to notice the little things.
5. Follow through.
If they show you something, don’t stop listening once the behaviour disappears.
Follow up. Make changes where you can. Keep your promise to pay attention. 🙏
Because when they realise that you’re actually listening, they may not need to shout quite so loudly next time. 😉
