Small today. Adult-scale responsibility later. 🐢

A Sulcata hatchling may be only about 5 cm. Some adults can reach about 76 cm, and this species can live for 50 years or more.

Before deciding, plan for the adult:

• secure, spacious housing
• strong boundaries for an active digger
• measured temperature, humidity and UVB
• a species-appropriate, high-fibre diet
• reptile-vet care and a long-term backup caregiver

A hatchling setup cannot be the whole plan. Responsible ownership means asking whether you can meet the adult’s needs for decades—not only whether the baby fits your space today.

This is a planning checklist, not a one-size-fits-all care sheet. Check your individual tortoise’s needs with a reptile-experienced veterinarian.

Which part do people underestimate most—space, lifespan, diet or backup care?
