The diet–microbiota–gut–brain axis

It is been well documented that poor diet may lead to cognitive dysfunction, while healthy diet supports mood and cognitive performance.

The microorganisms within the gastrointestinal tract communicate with the brain along the gut–brain axis and the composition and function of the gut microbiota is robustly influenced by dietary factors to alter gut–brain signalling. The researchers propose that a diet–microbiota–gut–brain axis to underpin health and well-being.

In this review, they provide a comprehensive overview of the interplay between diet and gut microbiota composition and function and the implications for cognition and emotional functioning. The researchers also describe how diet effects the gut microbiota and may modulate neuropsychiatric disorders.
