Cavaletti training: although we’re on vacation, we have a slow afternoon, so am taking the opportunity to do a 10 min cavaletti training with my dogs. The video does not properly show the set up. Cavaletti are bars where the dog has to walk or trot over. These today are low to the ground and a specific width apart so that I try to move them over in a quicker trot. Cavaletti trains proprioception or body awareness and in trot is also a bit of a conditioning work out.

Get a little inside view of my day as a physio. Today before I take a vacation so even more to prepare than normal to get all handovers, scheduling etc done for the upcoming 2 weeks. No down time today but all lovely dogs and clients, cleaning and lots of admin. I might be off for 2 weeks but Fitdog remains open, our fab team is there for you guys. I’ll see you soon! Excited for more Fitdog ‘adventures’

Luna, an Akita Inu, turns 14 end of this week. She’s such a sweet and elegant soul. Her pawrents started physio only a few months ago, as an attempt to get her to be a bit more stable on her feet, a bit more mobile. Come a few months later, they mentioned several times how happy they are that they gave physio a try. Although we cannot reverse age, Luna is more steady on her feet, at home and on walks. She does need constant help to get up or to not fall over. Some people might say ‘it’s an old dog, why bother, it is what it is’. Luna is the doggy personification as to why I started Fitdog. To help senior dogs regain some mobility and activity. To help our senior pets, these family members of ours, to live hopefully a more painfree and more mobile rest of their golden days. Remember old age is not a disease. We see it time again that senior and even geriatric dogs do benefit from physiotherapy..

Fibrotic myopathy: meet Tabby and Mosel, 2 German Shepherds with the same condition. It is an uncommon condition we only had 2 so far and strangely enough they where both here the same day. Fibrotic myopathy is a degenratieve condition where healthy muscle tissue is replaced by stiff, fibrous scar tissue. It most commonly affects the hindlimbs of German Shepherds. It results in a typical gait whereby the paw rotates inward and the tarsus (heel) outward, while the stifle (knee) cannot properly extend during the swing phase of the gait, as the impacted muscle cannot properly extend or stretch due to contracture of the scar tissue within the muscle. It is usual not painful but results in muscle tightening and gait compensations and prognosis for recovery is often poor. The earlier it is diagnosed and treated, the better. Go to treatment for now is stem cell replacement - (which is difficult to find a veterinary specialist for), followed by shockwave and rehab. Although stem cell therapy is not available in Luxembourg or close surrounding areas, Fitdog does incorprate shockwave in their treatments. Mosel had stem cell treatment abroad and is now on an intensive 2x week rehab plan and Tabby is getting regular rehab with shockwave at Fitdog,

Pet parents who come for the first time sometimes ask me if it’s ok that they stay during the treatment. The question takes me by surprise but I see how people could get the idea that they should not be present as we barely ever show the pet parents on our pictures. However we strongly believe that owner presence and to some degree participation, is very important as not only is it important for your pet to have you by his side, but it is also crucial for us as we’ll ask a lot of questions about your pet’s problems and sometimes little clues come out in the regular ‘chit chat’ we have. Stuff you may not have thoughed important to mention but that does help us understand how your pet feels. Like’ he was so funny stretching yesterday’… well a stretch could mean something to us. We also find it’s important that we can explain you why we do certain parts of the treatment and help you educate for instance how to do exercises at home, how to set up your home etc. That’s all much easier if you’re there in the room with us. That said, we do have a few occasions where the pet is actually a bit calmer, maybe less protective or ‘on guard’ when the pet parent is not there. And that’s ok too. We adapt as needed to make the session for your dog as positive as possible. But yes owner presence is definitely preferred. And it shows the deep bond between your pet and yourselves, as you can see from some of the pictures here during the photoshoot with Lisbeth Ganer Photography ❤️❤️❤️
