PONIES vs HORSES
The distinction between horses and ponies is not based solely on size. Ponies differ from horses in:

* Bone density
* Body proportions
* Metabolism
* Coat type
* Hardiness
* Behavioural tendencies
* Adaptation to environment

The 14.2-hand measurement was later adopted primarily as a standardized competition and classification threshold. This helped create consistency in:

* Equestrian competitions
* Breed registries
* Transport regulations
* Sales and breeding records
* Showing classes

So while height became the official dividing line for practical purposes, the true differences between horses and ponies are rooted in their:

* Evolutionary adaptations
* Breed characteristics
* Physical structure
* Traditional uses

This is why some pony breeds may exceed 14.2 hands and still be considered ponies, while some smaller horses under the height limit are still classified as horses based on breed type and conformation.

Rider weight can be a sensitive topic—but it’s an important one when it comes to horse welfare 🐴

A horse’s ability to carry weight is not one-size-fits-all. It depends on many factors beyond just size.

For example:
• Young horses should not carry their maximum weight until around 6 years old
• Horses recovering from injury should never be pushed to full capacity

It’s also important to understand that there is no universal standard worldwide 🌍
Some countries follow:
• 20% of body weight (more conservative)
• 25% (widely accepted guideline)
• 30% (less conservative)
• And some… no clear standard at all

What does this mean?
Every horse must be considered individually. Even a general guideline should always be adjusted based on the horse’s age, fitness, condition, and overall wellbeing.

At the end of the day, it’s not about the rider—it’s about protecting the horse ❤️

Horsey Avurudu at the stables was CRAZY fun! With the sweltering heat, we had many, many water breaks — but that didn’t stop the competitive spirit from kicking in! Our horseys were on FIRE🔥 Mighty and Honey were neck-to-neck the whole day, winning almost every event like true Avurudu champs! 🏆🐴💛
