Meet DEVON.

She is a street dog who we suspect is deaf.
I stopped back in April and gave her some food and medication for her skin.
Jenny repeated her skin medication in May and then took this photo of her several days ago!

Look at the transformation of her skin and coat!
DEVON it was a pleasure to help you and hopefully catch up on my next visit to Sri Lanka! 🩷

And then there was one..

I got a huge shock when Ramesh sent me this video.. 'Where's Choco?
My reply from Ramesh..
"Yes in down"

?!? 🤷🏻.. time to dig for info..

Turns out CHOCO has moved to a family members house which is sad as this little group has lost a friend but good because there's less pressure on Grandma who is trying to feed them all, with our support.

Rosie knows where he is so is checking in on him.. especially as their vaccines will soon be due. (Cost being covered by the Charity)

Meanwhile.. I need to get used to videos from Ramesh with only CRISP in them 😳😳

If you would like to support Crisp.. see below 👇🏻🩷

Maggots.. 🪰

Maggots are a HUGE issue and threat to the street dogs in Sri Lanka.
Hot climates - flies - open wounds - eggs - maggots = big trouble.

Once the maggots set in they can present life threatening situations.. and quickly too.
I've seen some pretty gross wounds being cleaned and treated by our vet and team.

I've been involved in picking hundreds of maggots out of wounds with tweezers.
I've seen our vet cutting away infected, dead tissue and then work out the best way to stitch a dog back together.
I've seen dogs suffering and die from maggot wounds.

We have medication that kills maggots and medication that can keep flies away from smaller healing wounds.

Maggot wounds also require lots of dressing changes.

Medication and dressings are essentials for us and donated money helps us keep this in stock for our patients.
All donations to the Dziko Project are really appreciated. 🩷

The sad stories I store in my head which I don't usually share openly in my blog involve maggot wounds.

The photos are of Buddy. He didn't make it. An older boy needing anaesthetics to treat a horrific maggot infested wound. We were devastated to lose him. 🥺💔

Here's Mr Wonky aka Hugo to brighten your day!!

He is a local street dog who lives close to Nishanti who is the loveliest and very skilled lady who makes our Dziko dog collars!

Mr Wonky is usually found snoozing away on Nishantis doorstep!
He is such a friendly and happy soul! 🩷🩷

Tumble and Millie sharing a meal! 🩷 They are just the cutest!

Support feeding is a huge part of the Dziko role and it definitely helps some of the street animals thrive.

Some of the dogs have regular access to food whilst others have to scavenge around.

There is no doubt that there are hungry dogs on the streets, some fighting for survival.

Many of the communities we frequent simply do not have the money or spare food to feed the dogs.

Being a small charity with limited funds we can't feed them all.. but we support where we can.

Tumble and Millie are part of a family of 8 animals needing our help. I have enough money for the next 3 months for support feeding. 🩷
Thank you Andrea Hughes Eddie Reid for donating 🩷🩷

Whilst I'm back in the UK Ramesh is feeding them all and sending me daily videos..bless him 🥰

I'm just hoping they will all be there in January next year.. I'm kinda getting used to not finding all the dogs I meet on my previous visits. 🥺

If you would like to help please donate here.. 🩷

JASMINE update!! 🩷
We met Jasmine on 22nd April. She had been dumped on a street leading up to the temple where Black Beauty and Grace live.

Puppies being dumped is unfortunately common in Sri Lanka.

Unwanted puppies from un-neutered dogs become displaced and appear suddenly on the streets.
Locals know they can't afford to care for them, they already have many street dogs, they have a genuine fear of Rabies.. so the problem is moved for someone else to deal with.

I don't agree with the actions but I understand why it happens..

Which proves.. the way forward is sterilisation to control the dog population and vaccinations to create safer communities.

Luckily for JASMINE she was dumped in a community who really appear to care for their street dogs.
The Dziko Project neutered and vaccinated her and we have a good rapport with the locals where she lives.

Working WITH the communities and the challenges they face.

Soooooo happy to see a healthy, sensitive but growing in confidence JASMINE when Rosie went to check on her recently. 🩷
