We are happy to say that today’s peaceful demonstration against Government Shelters for dogs was a great success.

Despite the bad weather, true animal lovers came together to stand up for the voiceless.

A heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you who took the time to join us and show your support. Your presence, dedication and solidarity meant so much and helped make this event a success.

Together, we sent a strong message that humane, sustainable solutions for street animals matter. We are grateful to everyone who stood with us today and helped raise awareness for the welfare of Sri Lanka’s street dogs.

Thank you for being a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. ❤️

It is understandable that many may initially view the establishment of dog shelters as an ideal solution. However, animal welfare organizations have consistently opposed such proposals, as they conceal significant risks that are often overlooked. Confining street dogs to shelters is neither practical nor sustainable. It is not a one-time investment but an ongoing commitment that fails to address the root causes of overpopulation and disease.

The government would need to spend significant funds on food, vaccinations, medical treatment, staff salaries, maintenance and ongoing care for thousands of animals.

If these same resources were invested in island-wide spay/neuter and vaccination programmes, we could humanely and effectively control the street dog population while improving animal welfare and public health.

Keeping innocent animals confined in shelters is not the answer. Once hidden away behind walls and fences, who will know their fate? Their cries will not be heard. They cannot speak for themselves.

That is why we must speak on their behalf.

We invite you to join us and stand up for the voiceless. They have no voice of their own, we are all they have.

With deep sadness, we share the news that Bunty passed away this afternoon while receiving treatment.

Bunty was a street dog from Battaramulla who had endured many hardships throughout his life. From all that we learned about him, life on the streets was far from easy. Despite everything he went through, Bunty remained a gentle and loving doggy.

Since January this year, Bunty had been receiving treatment after meeting with an accident and we did everything we could to help him. Following the accident, Bunty was unable to walk but with physiotherapy he gradually regained the ability to walk again. However, he was never able to pass urine on his own and over time he suffered from recurring urinary tract infections. Eventually, he stopped responding to antibiotics as well. Towards the end, Bunty also suffered from vomiting and diarrhea. His chronic urinary issues, caused by the accident, led to severe complications and scans later revealed damage to his kidneys and ureters.

Although funds were limited, we never gave up on Bunty and continued to fight for his recovery. Most importantly, Bunty was able to spend the last few months of his life in a warm and safe place, receiving the love, comfort and care he truly deserved.

Goodbye, darling Bunty. You are finally free from pain and suffering. May you rest in peace. ❤️🙏🏼

We have begun the third phase of the SD&CC Borupana project today. Our main focus for this phase is to vaccinate the puppies with DHPL. We managed to vaccinate all the puppies previously with ARV and today they were given the DHPL vaccine.

There is also a new litter of 5 puppies at the premises. 3 females and 2 males. They were vaccinated with ARV and dewormed today.

The Best Care Animal Hospital team also set up a cage at the premises to help catch the remaining dogs for spay/neuter surgeries. Our plan is to gradually feed them inside the cage so they become comfortable entering it, making trapping safer and easier. Otherwise, it is extremely difficult to catch them as the area is very large with many hiding places.

We sincerely hope you will continue to support us with this project. We are desperately in need of funds to settle our veterinary bills. Even though funds are very limited, we knew we had to vaccinate these puppies to protect them from these deadly viruses and give them a chance at life.

Any support, no matter how small, would mean so much to these innocent lives.

Both have been vaccinated and Maxine has also been spayed.
