Your great-grandparents grew their rope. Nobody teaches that anymore.
Six fiber plants that ran a homestead without a supply chain:
STINGING NETTLE , bast fibers water-retted 10 to 14 days yield linen-grade thread.
FLAX , dew-retted in field rows for weeks, then scutched into fine weavable linen.
H**P , pit-retted four to eight days in river banks for rope, sailcloth, and sacking.
CATTAIL , leaves split green and plaited directly, no retting, instant rush cordage.
DOGBANE , outer bark hand-rived dry and finger-twisted into strong two-ply cord.
YUCCA , sword leaves pounded on flat stone, fibers rinsed out for lashing and baskets.
The skill that vanished was not weaving. Weaving is still romanticized. What vanished was retting, the controlled rotting of plant stalks in water, dew, or pits to free the bast fiber from the woody core. Every plant above has a different method, a different timeline, a different fiber weight. That knowledge lived in the hands of ordinary farm families for a thousand years.
Cheap imported cotton and later synthetic cordage arrived and within twenty years the retting pit was filled in, the scutching board was firewood, and nobody bothered to write the method down because everyone assumed someone else still knew it.
Grow one of these plants this season. Ret a handful of stalks. Twist a single length of cord. The knowledge comes back fast once your hands remember there was never anything stopping you.
