As vets, we endeavour to provide the very best standard of care for all of our patients. Thing is, we have now acquired 3 million more so we need your help! WECare Worldwide is an organisation set up by UK volunteers in Newcastle upon Tyne, to give free veterinary care to animals in need worldwide. Ultimately, WECare Worldwide plan to extend veterinary services around the globe but, right now, we

are concentrating on tacking the issues with the street dog population in Sri Lanka, where we have witnessed some of the worst cases we have ever seen. It is estimated that there are up to 3 million street dogs in Sri Lanka. WECare Worldwide are in the process of carrying out a 5 year plan, in which we will look to help eliminate rabies in the country and also humanely reduce the numbers of unwanted street dogs. We also provide top level treatment for the many sick and injured animals on the island, including those affected by maggot wounds, fractured bones and hot water burns, which are very common. We provide all of our expertise for free 24/7, 365 days a year but we really need help with the cost of medicines and equipment which, we can assure you, are most definitely not free!! ✂️💉CNVR HALF-YEAR STATS ✂️💉

We're halfway through 2026 already – time reeeeeeeeeeeally does fly when you're having fun, hey? So, what better time to check our fancy data spreadsheet and let you know the impact our amazing CNVR outreach team has had in the last six months?? From 1st January to 30th June, the team has performed:

✂️ 2,904 neuters
💉 3,400 rabies vaccinations
💻 3,086 microchips
💊 1,344 extra treatments (TVTs, parasite treatment, skin disease, wounds, etc)

That's a HUGE amount of lives changed! If you're new here, our CNVR (catch-neuter-vaccinate-release) team works from a surgical suite in our fancy schmancy state-of-the-art 40-foot lorry that moves around the local community giving FREE neuters, microchips, and rabies vaccinations to both street and owned dogs 💪🏽 Neutering and vaccination is the ONLY ethical and sustainable way of reducing the street dog population and helping to keep the current ones happy and healthy 🎉

Microchipping each dog allows us to keep track of the dog population and swiftly bring up a dog's WECare medical records should we meet them again 🤓 Rabies vaccinations will always be higher than neuters because we also offer rabies jabs or boosters to dogs that are already neutered – rabies is still endemic in Sri Lanka and eradicating it at the source (by vaccinating dogs) is the most effective way of keeping humans AND animals safe 🙏🏽

If you follow us on Instagram you might recognise Zola, who we picked up at the start of Feb with an absolutely horrific maggot wound on his noggin 😳 The infestation was so bad that it took a couple of days to get it under control, and he also had tick fever so he was feeling preeeeeeeeetty rotten, the poor chap 😔 Healing a wound of this magnitude requires a LOT of patience and expert wound management, so Zola had to endure veeeeeeeeeery many dressing changes. He had an infection in the affected ear, which scuppered our initial surgical wound closure plan, so we treated the infection and left it to heal by secondary intention 💪🏼

After two and a half months of care it was finally time to surgically close the deficit, but during surgery we noticed a TVT brewing on his p***s, which required weeks of treatment. And so, three and a half months after arriving, following a zillion dressing changes, tick fever treatment, wound closure surgery, a neuter, six doses of chemo, a full set of vaccines, aaaaaaaaand parasite preventatives, Zola was ready to G**O of here!! 🎉

Perhaps the biggest transformation of all was Zola's temperament - he arrived a very snappy boy (fair enough – he felt like sh*te 😅) and slowly morphed into a sweet, patient boy who loved a snuggle 🥹 Wanna see his full story? Janey recently joined the looooooooovely Louise and Michelle as a guest on their podcast, ! She shares the story of how WECare started from our very humble roots, the process it took for her to realise that street dogs don't always need adopting, and the struggle it is to fundraise the HUGE amount of money we need to keep our emergency hospital running 😳

Oh, and LOADS of juicy goss about how her Dog Jog training's going (if you missed the news, Janey will be running the length of Sri Lanka later this year to raise money to build our brand new purpose-built street dog hospital, rehabilitation area, and veterinary training centre 🤯).

Horton was unceremoniously dumped last month by some absolute %$@*! humans who decided to push him out of their car in an unknown territory instead of getting him help. Great stuff!! (If you feel like sending a hex to those humans, we wouldn't stop you 🪄.) However, their loss is our gain 'cos Horton is safe with us now and we absolutely adore him – he's such a sweet soul 🥹

We've been treating him for severe elephantiasis on his left hind leg (as well as a milder case on his right hind leg), which is caused by mosquitoes infecting the blood with microfilaria AKA teeny tiny worms that mess up the lymphatic system and cause the swelling and skin hardening that Horton was suffering with on his affected legs.

Thankfully, treatment has been working and the swelling has gone down loads! 🎉 We did have a little blip where Horton went off his food, but Animal Care Assistant Chathuri made him special meals that got him eating again 😭 He's feeling much better now, and he'll soon be ready for surgery to remove the excess skin!! Huge news!! 💪🏼

As an animal charity it's hard to know how to help when the country you're based in gets devastated by a cyclone. The area we're in wasn't affected by last year's Cyclone Ditwah but we knew we had to help somehow – here's what we did to protect the animals and people in some of the island's worst affected areas.

Puppies make a loooooooot of mess (💩💩💩) but hey, we don’t mind ‘cos it means spending lots of extra time playing with them 😏 This little scamp is Beanie Weanie who came in last month with their mum after the CNVR (catch-neuter-vaccinate-release) team spotted her with a vaginal prolapse (yikes!).

Thankfully, both mum and pup are doing well – mama Butter Bean has had her prolapse sorted (praise be 😅) and has been spayed, while Beanie We**ie has had the usual puppy vaccines and parasite preventatives to set them up for a healthy life 💪🏼We’ll be neutering the little scamp when they’re big enough – no babies for you, pal!!

Matilda was hit by a vehicle at the start of June leaving her with a bulging right eye and a swollen left eye 😳 As you can imagine, she was stressed and in pain, so we sorted her out with some juicy pain relief before Dr Rusiru sedated her and managed to pop that eye right back in 💪🏼

Thankfully, both eyes were functional, so it was a case of keeping her comfortable, and preventing infection 🦠 She also had tick fever (super common in street dogs) so we treated her for that, spayed and vaccinated her, and then returned her to her lovely guardians three weeks later 🎉 Bish bash BOSH, baby!!
