As vets, we endeavour to provide the very best standard of care for all of our patients. Thing is, we have now acquired 3 million more so we need your help! WECare Worldwide is an organisation set up by UK volunteers in Newcastle upon Tyne, to give free veterinary care to animals in need worldwide. Ultimately, WECare Worldwide plan to extend veterinary services around the globe but, right now, we are concentrating on tacking the issues with the street dog population in Sri Lanka, where we have witnessed some of the worst cases we have ever seen. It is estimated that there are up to 3 million street dogs in Sri Lanka. WECare Worldwide are in the process of carrying out a 5 year plan, in which we will look to help eliminate rabies in the country and also humanely reduce the numbers of unwanted street dogs. We also provide top level treatment for the many sick and injured animals on the island, including those affected by maggot wounds, fractured bones and hot water burns, which are very common. We provide all of our expertise for free 24/7, 365 days a year but we really need help with the cost of medicines and equipment which, we can assure you, are most definitely not free!! We rushed Estaban to the hospital this week after receiving a call that a puppy was seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle 😭 He had a nasty open fracture to his right hind leg, as well as an extensive degloving injury (where the skin has been ripped away from the underlying tissue 🫣). This leg, unfortunately, couldn’t be repaired, so we had to amputate a couple of days ago once he was stable. At just four months old, this is a LOT for such a young pup to deal with 😔

It costs a pretty penny to run a veterinary hospital to international standards in Sri Lanka, but we REFUSE to cut corners – we believe that dogs like Estaban deserve the best possible care. We'll put the long hours in but we reeeeeeeeally need a hand with the finances - if you wanna help us get Esteban back on his feet then please consider shoving a few quid our way. We’ve got some really sad news today, we’re sorry 💔 A few weeks ago we had to say goodbye to one of the OG WECare dogs, Dot.

He’s been with us since we picked him and his brother Seal up as mangey puppies at one of our CNVR projects way back in May 2015. Despite treatment, Dot’s fur took a long time to become thick and luscious like his brother’s so we had to keep popping sunscreen on our little bald eagle to stop him burning 🥹

Thankfully, his hair eventually got the memo but it did take some time! We couldn’t put this sibling duo back on the street as they’d lost out on the chance of learning how to be street dogs during their (extended!) stay with us, so we put them up for adoption, hoping to find them a wonderful home together! 🤞🏼

Sadly, this never happened as they’re not the friendliest of dogs to newbies, so they lived with us at the hospital, before moving to our staff house with Frances and Issy during Covid, and later upgrading to Lagoon House life with their homie, Lasitha (and their unlikely bestie, a gangster chicken called Black Fury) 🎉

Dot’s health has been declining in recent months, and he’s had frequent short stays at the hospital for a splenic mass, bleeding lumps on his body, and a bladder infection.

However, he’d always perk up and though we knew he was on palliative care, he was still well in himself and spending a lot of time playing. Unfortunately, this all changed a few weeks ago when he was rushed to the hospital with laboured breathing, which we discovered was due to fluid in his chest cavity. With heavy hearts, we knew it was time to say goodbye, and we released him from his suffering surrounded by humans who absolutely adored him 🫶🏼

We laid him to rest at a beautiful spot on our new hospital land, overlooking the peaceful rice paddies and, despite knowing he’s had an amazing 11 years with us and his brother, it was still just absolutely heartbreaking. We miss you like crazy, Dot, but don’t worry – we’re giving Seal the best life before he’s ready to join you.

Fig was brought to the door earlier this week by some fishermen who’d found her trapped in discarded fishing net on the beach.

The twine had wrapped rightly around one her legs, causing a traumatic amputation when she struggled to break free 😔

This is a lot for a five-week-old kitten to deal with, but she’s in the best hands with us 🫶🏼

Janey’s running a 600+ km Dog Jog in October to help raise funds for our brand new street dog hospital, but you don’t have to go to that extreme 😅

What you CAN do, however, is a couch to 5k, a triathlon, a peaks challenge, a group dog walk, a bake sale, a car boot sale, a car wash day - ANYTHING! 🧽

Or how about a fitness class fundraiser if you’re a pilates instructor, a raffle to win a free cut and colour if you’re a hairdresser, or a fundraising giveaway at your place of work? 👀
