AWPA The Animals’ Welfare and protection Association Sri Lanka The Animals’ Welfare and protection Association (AWPA) was formed and registered under the Companies’

Registration

The Animals' Welfare and Protection Association (AWPA) was formed and registered under the Companies' Ordinance in 1963 by a small group of animal lovers, concerned by the distressing conditions that stray animals are subject to in Sri Lanka. Thereafter, the Association was certified as a voluntary organization under the Voluntary Social Service Organization Act No. 31 of 1980. Organisational Goals

- To ensure the sustainability of the shelters and optimal use of the available resources.
- To facilitate adoption of homeless animals and promote responsible pet ownership
- To prevent unwanted cat and dog litters through sterilization.
- To promote public interest in the welfare and protection of animals.
- To eradicate rabies through control of the stray dog population. Organisational Policies

- Sterilization is the only humane solution to reduce the population of unwanted dogs and cats - We are a 'no kill' shelter!
- Provision of comfortable and safe shelters is important as transit homes for animals awaiting re-homing;for rehabilitation of injured animals; for caring of old and hearing/vision impaired animals which cannot survive as strays; and to house fierce animals which are a threat to the local community.
- Develop public awareness on animal welfare through education
- Recognize and respect the rights of all animals to live free
- Safeguard and campaign for the rights and interests of all animals.

🐾 Remembering Judith with love 🐾

Shelter dana was provided by Leah Witton in loving memory of her mother, Judith, on her birthday which fell on August 17th.

Caring for animals in need was an integral part of who Judith was. Her compassion for every living creature was deep and genuine — and we are so grateful that this love has been passed on to her daughter.

Leah shares:

“My mum, Judith, taught me to love animals. Our family always had a canine member and the suffering of any living creature would make her cry. I am grateful to be able to remember her on her birthday by helping this wonderful charity take care of our four-legged friends — I know this would make her happy.”

Thank you, Leah, for choosing to remember your mother through kindness and compassion, and for valuing and supporting our shelter furbabies in Judith’s name. ❤️🐾

Remembering Kishan Samarasinghe — a man who meant so much to so many, and whose life was defined by the love, care and responsibility he gave so generously to those around him. He was smart, witty, kind and dutiful, someone who looked out for his family, his friends, his neighbours and, always, the animals he loved.

Gone far too soon, and much before he should have been, Kishan left behind a life that should have held so many more years, memories and moments. Those who knew him will remember his warmth, his quick wit, his kindness, and the quiet way he was always there when anyone needed him.

Given by Ramesha Samarasinghe ‘s friends in lieu of a birthday present to her, the dana is offered in Kishan’s memory, a particularly meaningful way to honour him — letting his love for animals live on in a simple act of care - giving them a meal in his name.

A small gesture for someone whose presence made such a difference.

May he be remembered with love, warmth and a smile.

Two years have passed since Flash left us, but some bonds don’t fade with time.

“Miss you everyday my beautiful boy” — Shalini Dias remembers Flash on his second death anniversary with a dana to the AWPA shelters, in honour of the beautiful boy who came into her life after being adopted from our Dehiwela shelter.

From a shelter kennel to a loving home, Flash was given the gift of a second chance — and in return, he gave Shalini years of companionship, joy and the kind of love only a much-loved dog can give. He was not simply adopted; he became family, and together they built a long, happy life filled with memories that remain long after his passing.

Today, Shalini remembers him by sharing that love with animals who are still waiting for their own forever homes. A meal given in Flash’s memory is a beautiful reminder that his life continues to make a difference, even now.

Forever missed. Forever loved. 🐾

Some dogs leave paw prints on your heart. Policie left a whole piece of himself there.

For more than 10 years, this tall, dark and very handsome boy called the Kahathuduwa shelter home. Silent and gentle, with the most soulful eyes, Policie loved people and had a quiet way of drawing them towards him.

He shared a particularly special bond with volunteer . Whenever they saw each other, both their eyes would light up. Then came the cuddles and snuggles — the kind that could go on forever and ever. There was so much love and comfort between them.

After a brief illness, Policie passed away. And, as she has done for so many of our old and ailing dogs, made sure he was not alone. She spent precious time with him during her weekly visits, giving him the comfort of a familiar voice, a gentle touch and someone beside him until the end.

There is something painful about the impermanence of life at a shelter. We have so many dogs to care for, and somehow we learn to keep going, because there are always more who need us. But that doesn’t mean we don’t feel the loss. Every dog who leaves takes a little piece of us with them — especially the ones who have been with us for so many years.

Goodbye, sweet Policie. You were loved, you were known, and you mattered. And you always will.

Today we’re celebrating a very special AWPA girl — Lessie, who turns 18 today!

It was her wish that gifts would be for charity, and Pia Hatch marked this significant milestone with a dana for our shelter animals, and we can’t think of a more fitting way to celebrate someone who gives so much love to them.

lessie caden comes to AWPA every week with such enthusiasm, cuddling and showering the animals with affection, sitting quietly beside the nervous ones and patiently helping them find their confidence. She has a truly special touch with animals, and watching them begin to thrive with her is a joy.

Dear Lessie, we hope your 18th birthday brings you all the happiness and love you so generously give to our dogs and cats. We’re so very lucky to have you as part of our AWPA family. Happy 18th birthday, with lots and lots of love!
