Work has officially begun on reconstructing 878 cattle sheds and 497 goat sheds affected by the 'Ditva' disaster, providing financial assistance of 1.5 million rupees per dairy farmer. The inauguration ceremony for constructing these sheds across eight affected provinces took place on the afternoon of September 19, 2026, at Awulegama, Wariyapola, through the Emergency Response Pool of the Integrated Rural-Urban Development and Climate Resilience Project (IRDCRP), which operates under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation.
Implemented with World Bank assistance at a total cost of 1,178.5 million rupees, the project provides 1.5 million rupees in financial aid to each dairy farmer whose cattle shed suffered total destruction due to the Ditva disaster. Technical guidance for constructing the sheds according to proper specifications is provided by the IRDCRP and the Provincial Department of Animal Production and Health, while local veterinary offices handle regional supervision. The primary objective of this initiative is to rebuild the disrupted livelihoods of farming communities and restore cattle and goat housing to withstand future natural disasters.
A large gathering attended the event, including political authorities such as Kurunegala District Parliamentarian Sujeewa Dissanayake, Kurunegala District Parliamentarian Attorney-at-Law Geetha Herath, the Chairman and members of the Wariyapola Pradeshiya Sabha, and Paduwasnuwara Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Sanjeewa Karunasagara. Also present were government officials—including Additional Secretary (Livestock Development) Dr. Sisira Piyasiri, Department of Animal Production and Health Director General Dr. B.S.S. Perera, along with officials from the Department of Animal Production and Health, the IRDCRP, and local veterinary offices—as well as numerous local residents.
