This Nepenthes barcelonae (BE-3770) decided to do something a bit out of the ordinary 🌱

In this video, Rob takes a closer look at fasciation — a rare growth abnormality where a stem flattens and widens instead of growing normally. It’s something you don’t often see in Nepenthes, especially in a seed-grown plant.

We look at what’s happening, what might have caused it, and what it means for the plant going forward. There’s also an attempt planned to take cuttings from the fasciated growth — with no promises, but plenty of curiosity.

This time I’m joined by Beauze Menzies of Cross Exotics in the U.S., who’s been doing some fascinating work with Nepenthes. We chat about everything from magnesium in fertilizers, salts in coir potting media, and much more. At times, it becomes controversial and even a little punchy, but hey, that’s what can happen if you put up unsubstantiated social media posts and then travel halfway around the world to walk into the lion’s den. 😆

Beauze is a smart young guy and gives a good account of himself. He has a great future ahead of him and is currently working with a hero of mine, Xavier de Labrousse of ‘Orchid Fever’ fame (if you get the book, see the chapter called ‘guns, roses, and harpsichords’). There is some great science in this episode.

If you’re into carnivorous plants or just curious how we get these tricky things to grow, grab a coffee and have a watch; this one’s a gem!
