🐾 Emergency Eye Condition: Melting Corneal Ulcer
🩺 What Is It?
Your pet has been diagnosed with a melting corneal ulcer—a serious eye condition where the surface of the eye (cornea) is rapidly breaking down due to infection and inflammation. This is a true emergency that can lead to blindness or loss of the eye if not treated promptly and aggressively.
---
🔍 Why It’s Serious
The cornea is being damaged by enzymes produced by bacteria and the immune system.
It appears as a cloudy, grey, or gelatinous spot on the eye.
It can progress very quickly, even in a matter of hours.
If the cornea perforates (bursts), surgery or eye removal may be needed.
---
💊 Treatment Plan
Your pet will need frequent medication—every few hours at first—and close monitoring.
1. Antibiotic Eye Drops
To stop the infection. Use as directed—often every 1–2 hours in the beginning.
2. Serum Drops (Anti-collagenase)
We may use your pet’s own blood to make drops that stop the “melting” process. These are applied every 1–2 hours initially.
3. Atropine Drops or Ointment
To reduce eye pain and relax the inner eye muscles.
4. Pain Relief
Oral anti-inflammatory medication may be prescribed.
5. Artificial Tears / Lubricant
To protect and soothe the cornea.

🛠️ Possible Surgical Treatment
If the ulcer is deep or not improving, we may recommend:
Conjunctival graft surgery
Third eyelid flap
Temporary eyelid closure (tarsorrhaphy)
These procedures help protect the eye and promote healing.
📅 Follow-Up
This condition can worsen quickly—we must recheck the eye in 24–48 hours.
Frequent follow-ups help us adjust the treatment and prevent serious damage.
🚫 What Not to Do
Do NOT stop the medication early.
Do NOT use over-the-counter eye drops unless prescribed.
Avoid touching or rubbing the eye.
