🌸 April is Native Pollinator Month – Let Sri Lanka Bloom Naturally!
Sri Lanka is home to an amazing variety of wild bees, butterflies, beetles, and birds that help pollinate our gardens and farms. Many of these native pollinators are disappearing due to habitat loss and pesticide use—but you can make a difference right from your garden or balcony!
🌱 This Avurudu season, grow these local pollinator-friendly plants:
-Binara (Ixora) – A bright favourite of butterflies and bees
-Sudu Saman (Jasmine) – Small, fragrant flowers perfect for pollinators
-Marigold– Great for repelling pests and attracting good insects
-Kathurumurunga (Globe amaranth) – Hardy and full of nectar
-Mee flowers (Madhuca longifolia) – Traditional, bee-loved tree blossoms
-Wild Basil (Maduruthala) – Let it flower to attract tiny pollinators!
🐝 Simple ways to protect pollinators in Sri Lanka:
-Leave a small “wild corner” in your garden or balcony box
-Avoid chemical sprays—even "organic" pesticides can harm bees
-Provide a shallow water dish with stones for bees to land on
-Let herbs like Thala (sesame), Maduruthala, and Mint flower before trimming!
💡 Did you know? Sri Lanka has over 150 species of native bees, many of them tiny and solitary. These bees are some of the most effective pollinators for vegetables, fruits, and even coconut flowers!
This Avurudu, let’s give back to nature. Every flower, every patch of wild space matters.
Let Sri Lanka grow green and kind. 💚🌿
