【Bhutan’s White-bellied Heron Conservation Team Visits
Okinawa 】

The White-bellied Heron, an endangered species
native to the Kingdom of Bhutan,
is estimated to number only around 60 individuals
worldwide.

To help prevent its extinction,
two veterinarians from our team were invited
to Bhutan in 2023, followed by a wildlife keeper
in 2025, to work on artificial incubation
and chick rearing.

This time, members of Bhutan’s White-bellied Heron conservation team from the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN) are visiting Okinawa! 🛫

They toured our facility and gained a deeper
understanding of our approaches to animal husbandry,
captive breeding, and wildlife conservation.

We will continue to share knowledge and experience
with our conservation partners around the world 🌏
and do our utmost to protect wildlife
facing the threat of extinction.

What do you think this “spike” is? 🤔

Believe it or not…
\ It’s hair! /

Meet the Okinawa spiny rat, a very rare species found only in the Yanbaru forests of northern Okinawa Island!

Its back is covered with hard, pointed hairs called “spine-like hairs,” measuring about 2 cm in length.

But the fur on its belly is soft and fluffy.

The species gets its name, “spiny rat,” from these stiff, pointed hairs on its back.

Why did these hairs develop this unusual shape?
What purpose do they serve?

These questions remain largely unanswered.

Since the 1980s, the Okinawa spiny rat population declined dramatically, and the species was once thought to be extinct.

However, in 2008, a survey by” Fumio Yamada” and colleagues at the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute confirmed that the species was still alive, when a live individual was captured for the first time in 30 years. ✨

Our Conservation Research Department conducts ecological surveys to learn more about this mysterious species.

These are actual spine-like hairs from an Okinawa spiny rat.
They’re rare and precious specimens that you don’t often get to see up close! 🤗✨
Take a good look! 👀

\ A Major Step Toward a Future for the Okinawa Rail! / ✨

Yesterday, the achievement of a new breeding technique for the Okinawa Rail received widespread media coverage.

A collaborative research team from NPO Okinawa Wildlife Federation, Osaka Metropolitan University, the National Institute for Environmental Studies, and the Okinawa Churashima Foundation has successfully achieved artificial insemination using frozen semen from the Okinawa Rail.

In 2019 and 2021, artificial insemination using fresh semen collected from males led to the world’s first successful hatching of Okinawa Rail chicks. 💫

Then, in 2025, the team achieved another first: successful artificial insemination using frozen semen!

Since 2005, we have been developing captive breeding techniques to help prevent the extinction of the Okinawa Rail, in accordance with the Ministry of the Environment’s conservation and breeding program for the species.

Preventing extinction requires the preservation of genetic diversity.

To achieve this, two essential technologies are needed: the cryopreservation of semen and artificial insemination using cryopreserved semen.

Research on these techniques has been ongoing since 2014. 🔬🧪 After repeated trials and setbacks 😖, we finally succeeded in 2025 in achieving artificial insemination using frozen semen! ✨

Although the egg did not hatch, embryonic development progressed to just before hatching.

This marks a major step toward preserving the genetic diversity of the Okinawa Rail for future generations. 💫

Our goal☝🏻 goes beyond this achievement.

We aim to successfully hatch chicks through artificial insemination using cryopreserved semen and raise them until they are ready for release into the wild.

Our research will continue as we work to protect the future of the Okinawa Rail. ✊🏻🔬🧬🧫

As the *miinishi* (new northerly wind) begins to blow, the arrival of Grey-faced Buzzards signals the deepening of autumn in Okinawa. 🍂

After breeding in mainland Japan and other regions, Grey-faced Buzzards begin arriving in Okinawa around *Kanro* (Cold Dew), which falls around October 8.

Some pass through Miyako Island on their way to Southeast Asia, while others spend the winter on Okinawa Island.

One clue to spotting a Grey-faced Buzzard is its call.

“Pik-wee! Pik-wee!”

Even if you can’t see the bird, that high-pitched, beautiful call might mean a Grey-faced Buzzard is nearby. 🪶

Look up at the sky and listen closely.

A message of autumn, carried on the wind:
“Pik-wee!” 🍂

Have you heard it yet? 👂🏻

\A Day in the Life of Our Staff: Preparing a Cage/

A Common Moorhen brought to us from Kumejima for emergency care.

The bird sustained a spinal cord injury due to a traffic accident or collision with a man-made structure, resulting in paralysis in both legs and leaving it unable to stand.

Our staff are preparing a cage tailored to the bird’s condition.

Two blankets are placed on the cage floor, followed by pet pads and paper towels.

To help support the bird’s body, which cannot stand on its own, towels are also arranged in a U-shape.

In wildlife treatment, creating a suitable cage environment is also an important part of care.

The animals brought to us vary in species, injuries, and physical condition. 😔

How can we support each animal’s body?
How can we reduce the burden on each individual?

Our staff carefully assess each animal 👀 and make adjustments through trial and error to create a suitable environment.

Even these behind-the-scenes tasks are an essential part of wildlife care. ✊🏻

🌏 October 10 is World Migratory Bird Day!

A day to raise awareness around the world about protecting migratory birds and their habitats. 🐦

Did you know that about 90% of the birds found in Okinawa are migratory birds? 🐦✨

If you hear a bird calling “Peekwee♪” overhead, it might be a **Grey-faced Buzzard**, often seen in Okinawa in autumn.

“Welcome back!” 💚

Keep an eye on the sky and watch as these birds ride the wind and soar overhead. 😊

🪶\An Okinawa Woodpecker
     returns to the forest/🪶

In June, an Okinawa Woodpecker—the prefectural bird of Okinawa—was rescued after colliding with glass at Kijoka Sho School in Ogimi Village.
Kijoka Sho School is a multi-purpose facility that uses the former Kijoka Elementary School to connect people with the nature and culture of Yanbaru.
After completing rehabilitation, the bird was fitted with an identification band and released recently.
People from Kijoka Sho School, who first came to the bird’s aid, joined us to watch the release.
Everyone cheered as the Okinawa Woodpecker flew strongly back into the forest of Kijoka. 👏🏻
Afterward, we exchanged ideas about preventing bird collisions and discussed what we can do together.
For Okinawa Woodpeckers living in the forest, collisions with glass are the most common cause of rescue. 💥
Some windows reflect the forest, while others allow people to see through to the other side. Birds may not recognize them as obstacles while flying.
The impact of a collision can be severe, and many birds lose their lives as a result. 😔
The Okinawa Woodpecker is found nowhere else in the world but the forests of Yanbaru.
There must be things we can do to prevent collisions with windows.
Products such as Bird Atarazu and other measures to help prevent bird collisions are already available.
We want to reduce preventable accidents, even if it is just one at a time.
Let’s work together to create forests where Okinawa Woodpeckers can live safely. 🌳✨
