What was accomplished at the Yatsugatake Horse Show last weekend?
TBD… based on the following-
Will each rider remember the custom bullet points I gave them to focus on?
Those bullet points are based on each rider’s current skill set , with these common bullet points-
Make sure the horse is guiding-
Directional control( horse is staying between the reins, going where it’s directed to go)
Rhythm or cadence control( basically speed), at each gait being used. Consistency is the goal…
For the more advanced riders-
Keep your standards, in regards to -
All of the above, in addition to-
Lead departures
Transitions
Frame
And finally, for everyone-
Keep your horse straight and don’t break gait( an original phrase coined by me), because it rhymes and is easy to remember !
Learn to practice at a show, smarter, not harder…

先週末の八ヶ岳ホースショーで何が達成されたのか？
未定（TBD）…以下の点次第です—

各ライダーは、私がそれぞれに与えた「重点ポイント（bullet points）」を覚えて実践できるでしょうか？

そのポイントは、各ライダーの現在のスキルレベルに基づいていますが、共通する重点項目は次の通りです—

* 馬がガイド（guiding）されていることを確認する
* 方向のコントロール
（馬が手綱の間に収まり、指示された方向へ進んでいること）
* リズムまたはケイデンス（cadence）のコントロール
（基本的にはスピードのこと）
使用している各歩様（gait）において、一貫性（consistency）を目標とすること…

より上級のライダーには—

次の点において、自分の基準（standards）を維持すること—

上記すべてに加えて：

* リードデパーチャー（lead departures／正しいリードでの発進）
* トランジション（歩様移行）
* フレーム（馬の姿勢・体勢）

そして最後に、全員へ—

「馬を真っすぐ保ち、歩様を崩さない（Keep your horse straight and don’t break gait）」
（私が考えたオリジナルフレーズです。韻を踏んでいて覚えやすいので！）

ショーでは、ただ闇雲に練習するのではなく、より賢く（smarter）、効率的に（not harder）練習することを学びましょう。

Yesterday the points of emphasis , in my opinion , were established for this small horse show in Yatsugatake.
So what’s the plan during the first day of riding?
- Same as any show, big or small, it’s my job to make sure every horse , GUIDES… stays between the reins, between my legs, and doesn’t push on my hands excessively.
- Find the places in the arena that might distract each horse.
If you don’t know the trouble spots, it’s impossible to show, smarter, not harder.
- Make sure each horse is relaxed and paying attention in the warm up area.
If the warm up is poor, the showing will be worse…
- Try to have every horse ready for the next day, when owners arrive to ride and enjoy their serious hobby.
The first day , that’s it and that’s all, and that’s a lot, lol.

昨日、この八ヶ岳の小さなホースショーにおける「重点ポイント（強調すべきこと）」が、私なりに明確になった。
では、騎乗初日のプランは？

* 大きなショーでも小さなショーでも同じ。私の仕事は、すべての馬が**ガイド（GUIDES）**できる状態、つまり手綱の間に収まり、脚の間にきちんといて、過度に手に押しつけてこないようにすること。
* それぞれの馬がアリーナ内で気を取られそうな場所を見つけること。
　問題になりそうな場所を知らなければ、「力任せではなく賢く見せる（show smarter, not harder）」ことは不可能。
* ウォームアップエリアで、それぞれの馬がリラックスし、注意を向けている状態にすること。
　ウォームアップが悪ければ、本番のパフォーマンスはさらに悪くなる…。
* 翌日、オーナーたちが来て真剣な趣味を楽しみながら乗れるよう、すべての馬を準備しておくこと。

初日は、それだけ。それがすべて。だけど、それだけで十分大仕事（笑）。

It’s horse show time in Yatsugatake this week.
What kind of horse show?
- It’s a, show with more control and precision kind of show
-It’s a, try to be correct while warming up , kind of show
-It’s a, try to execute correct maneuvers and on the Rail actions kind of show
-It’s a, try to show clean, without penalties kind of show
-It’s a,Horsemanship is the way to get better, kind of show
-It’s a, thinking of all the above, stepping stone to becoming a better showman/show woman, kind of show.
Some are here to Win.
We are here to, hopefully, improve…

今週は八ヶ岳でホースショーの時期です。
どんなホースショー？

* コントロールと正確さが求められるタイプのショーです。
* ウォームアップ中から正しいやり方を意識するショーです。
* 正しいマニューバ（動作）やレール（走行）での動きを実行しようとするショーです。
* ペナルティなしでクリーンな演技を見せようとするショーです。
* ホースマンシップ（馬術・馬との関わり方）が上達への鍵となるショーです。
* 上記すべてを考えながら、より良いショーマン／ショーウーマンになるためのステップアップの場となるショーです。

勝つために来ている人もいます。
私たちは、できれば少しでも上達するために来ています…。

In the Rulebook-

-. When using
a romal, the romal reins can only pass through the hand
once, the rider’s hand shall be around the reins with the
wrist kept straight and relaxed, the thumb on top and the
hand closed around the reins; no fingers between the reins
are allowed. The free hand may be used to hold the romal
provided it is held in a relaxed position and there is at least
16" of romal from the free hand to the reining hand.-

Think of holding the romal like you’d hold an ice cream cone.
Remember if you twist your wrist too far, you lose the ice cream…
If you squeeze the ice cream cone too hard, you lose your ice cream…
So when I’m teaching about how to guide a horse with Romal reins, I always ask the rider-
Still got your ice cream ???

ルールブックでは―

「ロマールを使用する場合、ロマールレイン（手綱）は手の中を一度だけ通すことができる。騎手の手は手綱を包むように握り、手首はまっすぐでリラックスした状態を保ち、親指は上に置き、手は閉じて手綱を握ること。手綱の間に指を入れることは禁止されている。空いている方の手はロマールを持ってもよいが、リラックスした位置で保持し、空いている手から手綱を持つ手までのロマール部分が少なくとも16インチ（約40cm）あること。」

ロマールを持つ感覚は、アイスクリームコーンを持つようなイメージで考えてみてください。

手首をひねりすぎると、アイスクリームを落としてしまいますよね…
アイスクリームコーンを強く握りすぎても、アイスがつぶれてしまいます…

なので、私がロマールレインで馬をガイドする方法を教える時、いつもライダーにこう聞きます―

「まだアイスクリーム、ちゃんと持ってる？？？」

Teaching an old reining horse how to pick his way over poles -
Here Jackson, a Smart Chic Olena gelding, long and lanky like some of them are, has a longer than normal stride, or step, but has learned to shorten his natural foot placement when navigating walk overs, Ranch trail style, without having his head low…
Reiner / Ranch Rider/Ranch Trail/Western Discipline Rail( although I wish AQHA had stuck with, Ranch Rail , because I think it better describes the action in Western Discipline Rail.
At 19 yrs of age, this gelding is continuing to evolve, as a show horse in a less physically demanding set of classes.
What’s my motto ?
Train smarter, not harder…

年配のリーニングホースに、ポールをうまく越える方法を教えること ―
ここにいるジャクソンは、Smart Chic Olena のゲルディングで、こういう馬によくあるように、細長く脚が長い体型をしています。そのため歩幅（ストライド）が普通より長いのですが、ウォークオーバーやランチトレイルスタイルの障害を越える際には、頭を低くしなくても自然な足の運びを短く調整できるようになりました。

リーナー／ランチライダー／ランチトレイル／Western Discipline Rail
（個人的には AQHA が “Western Discipline Rail” ではなく “Ranch Rail” の名称をそのまま使っていてくれたらよかったのに、と思っています。その方が動きの内容をより正確に表している気がします。）

19歳になった今でも、このゲルディングは、より身体的負担の少ないクラスでショーホースとして進化を続けています。

私のモットーは？
「きつく鍛えるのではなく、賢くトレーニングすること…」

A list of , do’s and don’ts for Professional horse trainers-

Do- appreciate and acknowledge the time commitment your Non Pros/Amateurs/Youth make in order to learn from you.
Do-give all of them equal time and attention, regardless of their level.
Do- be honest in your critiques, as well as applauding their improvements
Do- continue to improve your training/coaching skills

Don’t- give false praise. It will only lead to rider/owner dissatisfaction and disappointment later.
Don’t- ignore the Professional’s Code of Ethics for the Association you represent, as a Professional horse trainer
Don’t- call yourself a Professional horse trainer if you need to look down and check for the lead you’re on, or if you need someone at the rail telling you…
Don’t forget-someone, somewhere, is always watching, so always try to be fair, to the horse.
Don’t- belittle other exhibitors at a horse show. Without other exhibitors , it simply becomes a, demonstration.
And last time I checked, there isn’t any prize money offered in, demonstrations…
Do- Train and show smarter, not necessarily harder !

プロフェッショナルなホーストレーナーのための「やるべきこと」と「やってはいけないこと」—

Do（やるべきこと）
・ノンプロ／アマチュア／ユースが、あなたから学ぶために費やしている時間と努力を理解し、感謝と敬意を示すこと。
・レベルに関係なく、全員に平等な時間と注意を与えること。
・改善点の指摘だけでなく、成長や進歩もしっかり認めるなど、正直なフィードバックをすること。
・自分自身のトレーニングやコーチングのスキル向上を続けること。

Don’t（やってはいけないこと）
・根拠のないお世辞や過度な褒め言葉を言わないこと。それは後にライダーやオーナーの不満や失望につながる。
・プロのトレーナーとして所属団体の倫理規定を無視しないこと。
・自分がどのリードか確認するために下を見たり、外から指示されないと分からないのであれば、自分をプロのホーストレーナーと名乗らないこと。
・常に誰かに見られていることを忘れず、常に馬に対してフェアであるよう努めること。
・ホースショーで他の出場者を見下したり、けなしたりしないこと。他の出場者がいなければ、それは単なるデモンストレーションになってしまう。
　そして少なくとも私の知る限り、デモンストレーションには賞金は出ない。

Do（最後に）
・ただ闇雲に努力するのではなく、「より賢く」トレーニングし、ショーに臨むこと！

Thursday will be general warm up, and Ranch Riding practice.
Friday will focus on Reining, and how to win the chess match these older, seasoned horses want to play…

木曜日は全体的なウォームアップとランチライディングの練習。

This is a Public Service Announcement, especially for Japan where I’ve never seen these used-
Foal breakaway halters- so if the halter gets caught on something, the halter breaks before the baby’s neck does…
And if you think there’s nothing for a halter to get caught on, at your place, you are absolutely WRONG.
Horses will find a way, and a foal breakaway halter is the cheapest insurance you can buy…
Can’t find one in Japan?
Ask Rody san to make one or two for you.
I can send this one to anyone who needs one, or I can send it to Rody san so he can copy it.
Please, because foals are hard to make and can get injured or worse, easily.
Raise them smarter, not harder.
