It’s Reptile Awareness Day!

Today, we’re celebrating reptiles and highlighting the importance of protecting these amazing animals.

Did you know that more than 21% of reptile species are threatened with extinction?

At Durrell we work to protect some of the world’s most threatened reptiles including the Madagascar big-headed turtle, Ploughshare tortoise and Telfair skink.

Here at Jersey Zoo, we have two critically endangered Jamaican iguanas, a species thought to be extinct in 1948!

Whether you’re listening to a talk at the zoo or learning more about the incredible species we work with, there are plenty ways to discover why reptiles matter and how we can help protect them 💚

Planning on bringing Javan green magpies to your zoo in Planet Zoo 2 and wonder how we care for this critically endangered songbird?

Our Curator of Birds, Harri reveals the specialised care involved when looking after Javan green magpie.

Given the rarity of this songbird, providing additional support when they first hatch is vital and can make a real difference and give these remarkable birds the best possible chance of survival 💚🐣

Planet Zoo 2 has officially launched this week and one of the incredible species featured in the game is the western lowland gorilla 🦍🌿

Jersey Zoo has worked with gorillas for over 66 years and we know how important it is to have an environment that meets their needs and allows them to thrive.

Our primate Team Leader, Mark, shares some top tips on what to consider when creating the outside space for your gorilla’s new home🏡

Keep an eye out for part two where our expert keeper, George, talks about enrichment for the gorillas and why this is so important when caring for them 💚

The world’s largest rodent. Capybaras are semi-aquatic and spend a lot of their time in the water. Their Latin name even translates to ‘water pig’!

📍 Found in the wild: South America

🧬 Fun fact: they can stay underwater for up to five minutes

🗣 Behaviour to watch: they communicate using a wide range of distinct sounds. You’ll sometimes hear the young capybaras chirping

❗Myth-busting: often thought to be lazy and slow but they’re surprisingly fast on land and are powerful, agile swimmers

🌍 Conservation status: Least Concern
