EQUINE INFLUENZA CASES IN UK ‼️

The UK is currently dealing with a huge rise in confirmed flu cases across several counties, in both vaccinated and unvaccinated horses. We are lucky that we are protected by our geographic isolation, however horses travel back and forth frequently.

It is extremely important to practice good biosecurity with any new arrivals to the island. Temperature monitoring is advised prior to travel and isolation on arrival in Jersey.

If you have any concerns about travelling horses between the UK and Jersey please contact the team.

There are going to be some changes in the next few weeks with our beloved Hattie sadly heading back to the UK 😭 but we also have some amazing new team members starting.

Introducing Nicole ❤️🐎

Nicole has joined the team part-time to whip our vets into shape on the admin front and help with all aspects of the running of the practice. Nicole competes in dressage with her wonderful, cheeky Fell pony Saxon and will be helping with everything from booking appointments, insurance, repeat prescriptions and assisting our vets out on the road. I have assured her that we have the best clients in the world!

Also joining the team is head of HR Binky the mad Boston Terrier and chief client liaison officer, Dude the Spinone. They join Mr Pickles CEO heading up our canine department.

I’m sure all clients will breathe a sigh of relief that Ro is no longer in charge of admin 🤣 welcome Nicole 🙂

🇯🇪 Happy Liberation Day 🇯🇪

‘And our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today’

A day for remembrance but also for celebrating our community - a community I am so grateful to have been part of for 12 years (still a foreigner - but so thankful for everyone letting me stay 🤣).

Today we have been at the Lib show all day where our sponsored class (in hand veteran) was won by Darcey and Dark Lancer (aka Ted) 🥇

A special mention to goes to our beloved third placed Dark Jester, known to his friends as Flag. Dear Flag was well known on the jumping circuits as an absolutely brilliant campaigner, jumping the teams in his younger years! Flag is now 34 years old and has been retired to the field for many years. But he told us he wanted to go to a party and was just FABULOUS strutting his stuff and letting us all know he’s still got it ❤️

The show has been amazing - great atmosphere and a wonderful day out. Please all do come along tomorrow where we see the last exciting leg of the team jumping plus a whole load more wonderful competition.

If you see a committee member - please BUY THEM A DRINK/hug them/thank them profusely. This show takes a huge amount of work - thank you committee for all you do xx

(I can’t tag Tania and Tess or Steve so please forward on to say how much we appreciate you all)

Our Jersey racing season kicks off this Sunday, 26th April with some old favourites in contention plus some visiting trainers ready to do their best to shake things up 🐎

Whether you are a racing newbie or a seasoned ticket holder please come along to support our local trainers, enjoy the most beautifully-situated track in the world and have a lovely day out for the whole family.

Over the next few weeks we will be introducing some of our islands amazing ex-racehorses enjoying their careers after the track (including some golden oldies at 30 years old!) and talking a bit about these brilliant horses and how well we do as a community to take care of our racehorses in the next stage of their careers.

Of course the first one has to be 19 year old, ‘My Galway Man’, aka Island Equine Thomas. Thomas retired from the track at 7 and had a very successful eventing career in the UK before coming to jersey to look after his middle aged vet mother, have a quieter life and win Ro her very first sash in his new career as a show pony.

Watch this space in the next few weeks for our featured local thoroughbreds as we celebrate the diversity and brilliance of these lovely horses.

SEE YOU ON SUNDAY!

Ro is off island tomorrow until 20th April. Hattie is on hand to deal with all routines and emergencies including over the bank holiday weekend so your equine friends are as always in excellent hands 24/7

We are very lucky that the brilliant Nicole has come on board to support the team over the next few weeks and will be manning the phone and assisting while Ro is away.

So it will be a new (but just as friendly) voice on the end of the line for the next little while. Ro won’t have access to her personal messenger and personal phone some of the time so please call or message the practice number for any enquiries 07797 711800

Full-time equine vet - Jersey, Channel Islands

Due to our current amazing and brilliant vet moving back to the mainland, Island Equine is looking for our next colleague. Established as a one-man-band in 2022 with our second vet joining in 2024, we have built up a loyal following of truly lovely clients.

We are looking for a 2yrs+ qualified vet who shares our passion for first opinion work and the community and enjoys building strong relationships with clients. Varied workload from donkeys and happy hackers through to racehorses and high level performance horses. An interest in lameness and poor performance is essential. We don’t do routine dentistry so if you love teeth it isn’t the position for you.

In return we can offer a unique working environment in a truly stunning part of the world. Beaches and cliff paths galore with plenty of outdoor activities on your doorstep. 4 day working week with 1:3 OOH which is very quiet by UK standards and always close by given the island is only 9 by 5 miles. £50-£65k depending on experience.

For more information or to apply please contact Ro [email protected] or call 07797 892972 for an informal chat. Current colleague highly recommends and is available to answer any questions.

We are so incredibly proud of Ryan Le Monnier who was awarded the Rose Bowl for his contributions to disabled sport at the Jersey Sport Council awards last night.

Ryan is not only an inspiration for his achievements in RDA dressage, flying the flag for the island at UK competitions. But he is a lynchpin of our equestrian community always on hand to help and support at our local events.

Well done Ryan! We are all so very proud of you

Sycamore seedlings 🌱 are popping up everywhere 😭……..even on Dr Ro’s car (which admittedly could use a wash…!)

Sycamore poisoning is a serious and often fatal condition caused by the Hypoglycin A toxin that can be present in some sycamore trees. We see two yearly peaks in clinical cases - in the late autumn when the helicopter like seeds are blown across pastures and in the spring when the seedlings pop up.

The seedlings should be removed from pasture either by hand pulling, mowing or using chemical spraying where they are wide spread. Once pulled or cut the saplings should not be left on the pasture due to risk of ingestion - they are still potentially toxic once removed.

Where grass is sparse, ensuring horses have access to additional forage in the field can limit ingestion of the seedlings.

Signs of sycamore poisoning include sweating, stiff gait or reluctance to walk and dark brown-coloured urine. If you have any concerns about sycamores please call the practice for advice

Celebrating International Women’s Day 2026 🩷

Today we celebrate the achievements and contributions made to our profession by all the brilliant women who dedicate their lives to veterinary medicine. 115 years of celebrating achievements and raising awareness about gender inequality and the issues that impact the advancement of women across all professions.

Nurses, admin team, GPs and specialists - we are celebrating all the veterinary ladies today.

Throwback to when our visiting specialist Rachel Tucker Equine Surgeon was an extremely good sport about having to travel by small boat and tractor bucket to reach our first patient of the day in Sark 🤣
